Critics Consensus

Though its narrative themes are all too familiar, Epic is beautifully animated and crafted with just enough flair to make for solid family entertainment.

Produces images of poetic power ... The catch is that the world the filmmakers create is far more interesting than the story they tell in it in it or the characters they put in it. Go to Full Review

Only the very young will draw much from the generic storytelling, while the handsome animation of the natural world is wasted on dull characters and unexciting situations. Go to Full Review

Knowing the state of the animation industry, and how artists and animators put their hearts and souls into their craft, hoping to create something truly special, makes this end result very disappointing indeed. Go to Full Review

See more Karen A Aug 27 The modern day FernGully! Visually beautiful, awesome voice work, and something I definitely want to see a sequel to! Even though with Disney's acquisition of Fox, and the ending of Blue sky studios, that's unlikely to happen. Which is a pity because if you're a nature girl/guy like me, or an enthusiastic kid, or simply just believe in magical possibilities- you will love this movie! See more Anna S Aug 23 It’s definitely not…epic, but certainly not the flop movie some people make it to be. On one hand, you have a story that has been told over and over a million times with a not so interesting way, main characters that seem dull at moments, and some parts where the slow pace of the movie is tiring. On the other, you have extraordinary visuals, a wonderfully built magical world, some secondary characters that (literally) carry the movie, and the battle sequences are carefully detailed and designed to magnetise your eyes on the screen. The concept behind the need to care and protect the environment is lost somewhere between the battles, the love story and the hilarious slugs, and at the end it is more of a story about letting things (and people) go, and how the world will keep spinning and we’ll have to move to its pace if we don’t want to get stuck in the past. That is, of course, a very nice message, but that’s not something that its target audience could absorb, and as a child it was a pretty pointless movie for me. As an adult, I learned to appreciate the hidden meanings of each scene and how it affected not only the plot, but the characters’ development as well. Is it my go-to movie? Definitely not. Is it a movie that I urge everyone to see at least once? Yes! See more Read all reviews
