Critics Consensus

The Equalizer 2 delivers the visceral charge of a standard vigilante thriller, but this reunion of trusted talents ultimately proves a disappointing case study in diminishing returns.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Fuqua's direction is slick but generally uninspired. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Washington is a pleasure to watch on the screen. The two-time Oscar winner is able to tap into his own surplus of moral righteousness even when the script is pulling the carpet out from under him. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times It's often cheesy and it's not deep, despite repeated cameos for a copy of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, but it is, appropriately enough, the equal of The Equalizer. Rated: 3/5 Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Nyle Coleman InSession Film Some may find the ending acceptable but unfortunately it hurt the film considerably for me. Rated: C+ May 9, 2024 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine It falters when it comes to action, especially during a climax that takes place in the middle of a storm, and where the violence becomes murky and hard to enjoy. “The Equalizer 2” never reaches the same level as its predecessor. Mate P The Equalizer 2 is very similar to its predecessor, but the editing got better and the film is much more satisfying emotionally. The main character is definitely the same and didn't change at all, but that was never the point. He is a protector and his morals are near perfect. The plot line with Sammy was my favourite part, the last scene with him is my favourite scene so far in the franchise. The dialogues are no bad, but the story is predictable and I already knew who the villain is so that wasn't a surprise either. I didn't like the twist, it felt forced, like the wanted to surprise the audience so much that they went too far. It just didn't make sense for me. The cinematography and directing is still just not bad, but the editing got better. I could see what was happening during the fight sequences and the pacing got a little better, but the film was still boring, so there's still much room to improve. The Equalizer 2 is worse in writing, but better in editing and pacing than the first movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Benyamin M Not as good as the first one but still great action and a great cast and story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review matthias s As a fan of Denzel Washington and having enjoyed *The Equalizer*, *Equalizer 2* fell a bit short. While Washington delivers a solid performance, the film lacks the spark that made the first one engaging. The action sequences, though well-choreographed, are too few and far between, with much of the runtime taken up by a story that feels overly predictable and cliché. Pedro Pascal shines as usual, adding a much-needed layer of charm, but it isn’t enough to elevate a story that ultimately feels thin and generic for its length. The movie is well-made, with sleek visuals and polished direction, but it lacks the refreshing feel of the original. Overall, *Equalizer 2* is a decent but forgettable thriller with more focus on plot than action, which doesn't quite hit the mark for fans of the first. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Kevin R I guess the expectations were slightly higher for the sequel because the first film was so good. Not a bad film at all but this one leans more on the vengeance side rather than Justice and compassion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Sebastian L Naively I thought that wrinkles had been ironed out and lessons had been learned, but about half way through I realized that The Equalizer 2 has inherited a lot of issues from the first one. It's not all bad - there are good moments and better characters, but Fuqua's lingering tempo and the script's lack of plot is frustrating. And once again the climax is one of the least exciting I've ever seen. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Sams K I prefer the first. A good story that could have been developed way better.
