Critics Consensus

The Equalizer 2 delivers the visceral charge of a standard vigilante thriller, but this reunion of trusted talents ultimately proves a disappointing case study in diminishing returns.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Fuqua's direction is slick but generally uninspired. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Washington is a pleasure to watch on the screen. The two-time Oscar winner is able to tap into his own surplus of moral righteousness even when the script is pulling the carpet out from under him. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times It's often cheesy and it's not deep, despite repeated cameos for a copy of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, but it is, appropriately enough, the equal of The Equalizer. Rated: 3/5 Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Nyle Coleman InSession Film Some may find the ending acceptable but unfortunately it hurt the film considerably for me. Rated: C+ May 9, 2024 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine It falters when it comes to action, especially during a climax that takes place in the middle of a storm, and where the violence becomes murky and hard to enjoy. “The Equalizer 2” never reaches the same level as its predecessor. RJ The original Equalizer film with Denzel was definitely a stunner. I feel like this one was a bit of a step down, but not that far down from the original. Plus what makes it not feel like a sequel is the fact that his hair is grown in, in this film. Unless I’m missing something, it just feels like a continuity error throughout the whole movie and that’s one of the smaller reasons I gave this film one star less. Either way? Denzel Washington carried this film and I still loved it. Especially the hurricane sequence. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review D W Entertaining watch, on par with part 1 for me. Great action. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/25 Full Review Audience Member Watched all of them- this is probably the best one. Weird 3 would get all the glory, I liked that too but thought this one was slightly better. Even the first is legit. A great collection to bust out on a rainy day. Recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Mathieu D I've been a long-time fan of Denzel Washington and have enjoyed most of his films. The Equalizer (2014) was a great start — dark, balanced, and deeply satisfying. The sequel, however, felt weaker in my opinion. Everything that made the first movie great is still here: Robert is badass, sarcastic, and intimidating — a cold, efficient killer. The action scenes showcase this perfectly, maybe even better than in the first movie. But two things feel out of place. First, the kid he tries to save — it feels like the writers wanted to preserve the “savior” aspect from the first film, yet it doesn’t really serve the story. That screen time could have been used to explore the conspiracy more deeply, which is the second weak point. We learn very little about it, and the final showdown in the village where Vivian comes from feels more like an excuse for cinematic scenery than a logical conclusion. The Equalizer 2 delivers a decent story, decent action, and decent intensity — but it never comes close to the impact of the first film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/14/25 Full Review Charlie B Not as good as the first one but it’s still solid Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/30/25 Full Review Oliver F Loved the first movie, this one seems a little too convoluted, focused more on his past which may not be the thing that relates the MC to the audience.
