Critics Consensus

The Equalizer 2 delivers the visceral charge of a standard vigilante thriller, but this reunion of trusted talents ultimately proves a disappointing case study in diminishing returns.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Fuqua's direction is slick but generally uninspired. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Washington is a pleasure to watch on the screen. The two-time Oscar winner is able to tap into his own surplus of moral righteousness even when the script is pulling the carpet out from under him. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times It's often cheesy and it's not deep, despite repeated cameos for a copy of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, but it is, appropriately enough, the equal of The Equalizer. Rated: 3/5 Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Nyle Coleman InSession Film Some may find the ending acceptable but unfortunately it hurt the film considerably for me. Rated: C+ May 9, 2024 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine It falters when it comes to action, especially during a climax that takes place in the middle of a storm, and where the violence becomes murky and hard to enjoy. “The Equalizer 2” never reaches the same level as its predecessor. Rated: 3/5 Oct 17, 2023 Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog Denzel is always immensely watchable and the hurricane-set finale is packed with suspense, but overall the movie is dampened by an unfocused and predictable plot. RJ The original Equalizer film with Denzel was definitely a stunner. I feel like this one was a bit of a step down, but not that far down from the original. Plus what makes it not feel like a sequel is the fact that his hair is grown in, in this film. Unless I’m missing something, it just feels like a continuity error throughout the whole movie and that’s one of the smaller reasons I gave this film one star less. Either way? Denzel Washington carried this film and I still loved it. Especially the hurricane sequence. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review tim s The formula is virtually identical to the first film, yet the globetrotting nicely illustrates how far Denzel's Robert McCall is willing to go for justice. The apartment scene, in particular, is a standout moment that brilliantly showcases McCall's character. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Daniel N Not as good as the first movie. Slow burning. More of a murder mystery than a revenge story. Denzel is awesome as always. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/28/25 Full Review Kevin P A decent sequel that may slow down in action and excitement for a good middle chunk of the movie, but builds on grounded characterization and an insider deeper look into his world despite the thin direction of the plot. Denzel Washington is great as always while Pedro Pascal serves as a refreshingly different antagonist that sets him apart from the villains of the first movie. The mentorship between Denzel and the young teen was cute, even if it's final conversation after that crazy climax felt a bit thin coming from the terrified teen’s perspective. The action near the beginning was pretty entertaining and the climax set in the hurricane was a pretty cool setting. It’s not as exciting or purposeful as the first movie, but luckily there’s enough charm and care put into this to make it a decent sequel worth your time if you liked the first one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Aleksandar D Denzel against the world again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Elijah M It was fun but less action than the first but still good Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
