ERIC RAVILIOUS: DRAWN TO WAR is a true story. Eric Ravilious is as compelling and enigmatic as his art. Set against the dramatic wartime locations that inspire him, Margy Kinmonth's film brings to life this brilliant but still grossly undervalued British artist. Caught in the crossfire of war 80 years ago, Ravilious's legacy largely sank without trace, until now. Made with the blessing of the Ravilious Estate, this first full length feature documentary about Ravilious unfolds in his own words, through previously unseen private correspondence and rare archive film.

Wendy Ide Guardian The film makes a case that Ravilious should be regarded, alongside the likes of Turner and Constable, as one of Britain’s great landscape artists. Rated: 4/5 Jul 6, 2022 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) This fine overview does convince you of his singularity, while also coaxing you into the sunlit, subtly clouded uplands of his lost world. Rated: 4/5 Jun 30, 2022 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz An absorbing, enlightening watch (who knew that he created one of cricket’s most iconic images?) that’s likely to win Ravilious an army of new admirers. Rated: 4/5 Nov 10, 2023 Full Review Tom Cassidy Common Sense Media This evocative documentary does a great job at bringing its subject to life. Through his diary entries and letters (read by Freddie Fox), Eric Ravilious: Drawn to War captures the artist's charm and joy for life. Rated: 4/5 Jul 19, 2023 Full Review Hilary A White Sunday Independent (Ireland) Although adhering to a documentary-portrait format, this is sturdy and sound cultural filmmaking. Rated: 4/5 Jul 6, 2022 Full Review Saskia Baron The Arts Desk A superbly mounted retrospective at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2015 helped raise Eric Ravilious’ reputation in the art world; let’s hope that this ingenious and beautiful documentary will help even more. Lucy M Good but rather too much focus on the war and on Ravilious himself and not enough about Tirzah Garwood. She was very much cast as "the wife of the great artist" instead of acknowledging her influence on him and her work, which is just as worthy of note as his. Yes, she was hurt by his affairs, but she had an affair herself, which was completely omitted. Could done with more on their lives and art, and fewer talking heads. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic film. Very enjoyable - and if you like art, you will love it. Highly recommended.
