tim h This is a classic 90's Australian film with exceptional performances from Hugh Jackman, Marin Mimica and Leah Vandenburg in particular. Marty Dennis and Aaron Blabey were strong as well in what was ostensibly a family drama surrounding the lives of two brothers in Sydneys inner west. The script kept you on a slow burn as at times an aloof spectator until second half of proceedings when things hotted up between the two brothers (Jackman and Mimica). Not many movies are so confrontational these days, with each of the main characters being ripped if not torn apart by both themselves and each other as they dealt with their troubled upbringing at the hands of a violent father and absent Mum. If you enjoy Ausutralian drama, or any drama for that matter, Alan White's Erskineville Kings is must see. Worth watching for Jackman's performance alone. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Audience Member Depressing and bleak. Quite an unnecessary film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review paul a Aussie-style anger management issues Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This critically acclaimed Aussie indie film is as gritty and raw as they come. Featuring Hugh Jackman in his breakout role, Erskinville Kings is a must see for fans of Aussie films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review brendan n Hugh Jackman is very strong in the film and saves what grows into a very overly dramatic film. The filmmaking team don't have a lot of convincing characters or depth to carry the film for the duration and it's a bit performance based. I have wanted to watch this film for years, believing it was an indie great, but sadly it underdelivered for me. Jackman clearly outshines the others, his presence is intense and he carries every scene. The film grows stronger but the early sections of the film are a little hit and miss for me, you don't have a very clear reason about the hatred for the dad. They play one scene with loud whips, which is like a comedy and it demonstrates a lapse with the filmmaker. There is a lot of talent in the film, but not used correctly. 09/04/2019 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent performances Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
