Scott Marks San Diego Reader Be it divine intervention or just pure dumb luck, Fancher never lost his foothold on the fringes of cinema. He lived his life as if it was a movie waiting to be made. Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2017 Full Review Peter Hartlaub San Francisco Chronicle A half-dozen true Hollywood stories are presented in "Escapes," all offered in a matter-of-fact style that seems detached from typical celebrity brand-building and false humility. Rated: 3/4 Aug 16, 2017 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times "Escapes" is as unconventional as its subject, demonstrating the charming things that can happen when a life in no way ordinary gets documented by a filmmaker most unusual. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema To make it in Hollywood, you got to have duende, and Hampton Fancher has duende in spades. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 26, 2021 Full Review Jon Hogan Hyperallergic Michael Almereyda's brilliant documentary Escapes presents a massive backlog of images from the career of actor and screenwriter Hampton Fancher, tinging it with Fancher's own keen self-awareness. Feb 7, 2020 Full Review Glenn Heath Jr. San Diego CityBeat Escapes feels like a fitting and strange tribute to someone whose robust intimacy with life remains just as complicated today. Audience Member This documentary on the life and career of Hampton Fancher is definitely not told in an ordinary doc way, and thus may not appeal to everyone. But Fancher, who co-wrote the screenplay for the groundbreaking classic sci-fi movie Blade Runner (1982) and subsequently The Mighty Quinn (1989), The Minus Man (1999) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017), led, from adolescence on, an incredible and fascinating life. Early on the film is very disjointed, in my opinion, but as it progressed I got more adjusted to its style and felt it became much more coherent. It's only, though, in the final 20 minutes that we get the backstory of how Fancher, along with others, was able to bring Blade Runner to the screen. Be aware there were no subtitles available on my DVD copy and there is explicit language throughout the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the most surprising documentaries I've ever seen. What a life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
