steve d The script should not have attracted these actors. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a story of someone who was detached from life and the people around him including his wife and daughter. It story of how he finds his way back though his discovery of an exceptional ability. it is also a troy of limitation since he finds that some things cannot be changed and some thigs cannot be undone Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Nathan Del Amico (Romain Duris), a brilliant New York lawyer who leads a life of professional success, but his private life is pretty dismal since he divorced Claire (Evangeline Lilly), his only love. Until he meets Doctor Kay (John Malkovich), a mysterious doctor who introduces himself as a "Messenger." He claims that he can sense when certain people are about to die, and that he is sent to help them put their life in order before it's too late. Nathan doesn't believe a word of this, but soon afterwards he witnesses some disconcerting scenes which seem to confirm the doctor's claims... "Afterwards" puts the focus on death and dying, but yet tries to send a message to the viewer about life and how to live. I reckon we all have had reflections on past events in life and thoughts on how life should be lived going forward. Nathan has learned how to shut down his emotions as a defense mechanism towards everything that is difficult. That´s easy to relate to. While Claire has moved on in life and tries to be open about her emotions. I can´t imagine how you could prepare yourself to die by truly embracing life when you know it´s over. That´s a tricky one. The existential and partly supernatural storyline is interesting and Duris/Malkovich/Lilly goes head to head with their characters, but despite this there´s something that "Afterwards" simply lack. Something that really engages you both brain wise and with the heart. "Afterwards" just didn´t move me as much as I was hoping for. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Romain Duris stars as Nathan Del Amico, an attorney doubly haunted by his past, as the survivor of a near-death experience as a child and a witness of his own baby's death. As a product of these crises, Nathan has buried himself in his work and now suffers from a bad case of familial estrangement from his separated wife Evangeline Lilly and little girl. Then the mysterious Dr. Kay (Malkovich) turns up, claiming that he has clairvoyant visions informing him when someone is about to die - a gift as a "messenger" that enables him to make each person's transition out of life a smooth and easy one. Suddenly, upon hearing Kay's claims, Nathan feels his death-laden memories double in intensity - and grows increasingly convinced that either he now stands on the verge of death, or that he has the same messenger abilities as Kay. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Meandering drama in which John Malkovich spends the entire movie pestering Romain Duris with riddles and esoteric mumbo jumbo about how he's a "messenger" -- someone who sees a funny white light around people about to pop their clogs. The terrible title should be a warning: steer clear unless in need of a nap.
