      Critics Consensus

Claustrophobic and stylish, Europa Report is a slow-burning thriller that puts the science back into science fiction.

Aaron D Effective scares, great tension and suspense and an overwhelming sense of dread, claustrophobia and feelings of insignificance are in large heaps in this movie! The only thing that holds it back are post-production editing choices (the schizophrenic changes of camera angles, or 'radiation' effects), deaths that make little sense or are easily avoidable and bland characters. The actors were passably believable, but the characters themselves were not all that interesting. Set and costume design was great and overall atmosphere and ambience was well done. Would recommend! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Ollie W The movie had a weird downbeat vibe. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Allen K Brilliant. At last a SciFi film for people with a brain. The few ‘boring' reviews here are obviously from those who prefer endless explosions, mutant monsters, laser-gun battles, and space-ships crashing into each other left, right and centre. It's a SCIENCE fiction film. The clue is in the genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Tony G Great subject and concept but the delivery is stiff and disjointed. Clearly unconvincing 'in ship' footage didn't help and a highly predictable ending too. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/24 Full Review Daniel C Ridiculous, pretentious and boring. Every situation that moves is either impossible or pushed by decisions astronauts would not make. No way to get invested when every emotional situation is manufactured for effect right before your eyes. Also, hard sci-fi? Not at all. Nothing makes sense. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic There is something refreshing in the decidedly downbeat "Europa Report," a science-fiction film with the emphasis on science that doesn't cheat on the tension. Rated: 4/5 Aug 22, 2013 Full Review Walter V. Addiego San Francisco Chronicle Low key and earnest, Sebastin Cordero's "Europa Report" makes compelling use of familiar genre material to create an intelligent science fiction thriller. Rated: 3/4 Aug 15, 2013 Full Review Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer There are scenes of unutterable beauty in Europa Report, a low-budget space exploration sci-fi suspenser from Ecuadorian director Sebastin Cordero. Rated: 3/4 Aug 9, 2013 Full Review Jennifer Bisset CNET Prepare to be sucked into a vacuum of suspense, made more heart-pumping by Europa Report's preoccupation with plausibility. Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Cordero can’t seem to decide if he’s made a horror movie or a heady sci-fi tale, and his genre mashup feels unbalanced for it. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 2, 2022 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Filmmaker Cordero delivers a found-footage thriller that admittedly does suffer from the various problems one associates with the genre...
