Ethan Gilsdorf Boston Globe Like a surly teen pilot, you, too, might find yourself bored and muttering, "Honestly, maybe the fate of humanity and the world isn't important to me, either.'' Rated: 2/4 Mar 3, 2011 Full Review Simon Abrams Slant Magazine Sets the stage for new, apocalyptic changes in the next "Rebuild" feature, and they appear to be the kind of changes fans have been waiting on for years. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 22, 2011 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times It's strictly for the fans, who will furiously parse the changes in the narrative (including a new female pilot) and the nonsensical stew of philosophical and religious symbolism. Rated: 3/5 Jan 20, 2011 Full Review Ard Vijn ScreenAnarchy It is a fever dream for sure, but one that has been lovingly embellished with details and technically polished until it has become its own weird-yet-beautiful thing. Rated: 8/10 Jan 9, 2022 Full Review Chase Burns The Stranger (Seattle, WA) The Evangelion franchise is almost incomprehensibly dense, encompassing, among many things... Jan 5, 2022 Full Review Annalee Newitz io9.com You don't have to be a giant Evangelion fan to enjoy Evangelion 2.0...it asks whether it's possible to take on grown-up responsibilities and stay human at the same time. And the answer is as complicated as the mystery of the angels. May 23, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

kish b ★★★★★ Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance is pure cinematic adrenaline, the moment the Rebuild series stopped being a remake and became something bolder, wilder, and infinitely more thrilling. From the very first scene (that jaw-dropping moon base battle with Mari dropping in like a comet), you know this isn’t the Evangelion you grew up with. Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara crank everything to eleven: the action sequences are some of the most spectacular ever put on film (the Zeruel fight and the Tenth Angel descent are still unmatched in scale and fluidity), the character redesigns are gorgeous, and the new soundtrack absolutely slaps. But what truly elevates 2.22 into masterpiece territory is how it deepens the emotional core while delivering blockbuster energy. Shinji’s desperate, heartbreaking attempt to save Rei in the final act isn’t just heroic; it’s devastating. The "I’m home" / "Welcome home" moment between him and Misato hits harder than ever. Asuka’s arrival shakes up the entire dynamic, and Mari adds a chaotic spark that keeps you guessing. By the time those final minutes roll around and the screen fades to white with that gut-wrenching piano note, you’re left speechless, exhilarated, and terrified of what’s coming next. Visually stunning, emotionally raw, and narratively fearless, Evangelion: 2.22 is the peak of action-driven anime and the film that proved the Rebuilds could surpass the original in every way. Still the best-looking animated movie I’ve ever seen. 10/10 without hesitation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Thomas H Evangelion 2.22 is a good film its diffrent from teh original series not like the 1 one which is practically only a reanimation it has a diffrent story line to the original some key factors are kept like asuka living with shinji and misato and so on but in this film i feel like they show more the emotional side of asuka and rei or at least they act more emotinally Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/29/25 Full Review THE NASHVILLE I Evangelion STILL wont offer any origin story or explanation for the hundreds of details in this fantasy world. It’s entertaining, but how about some character development? How about a story arc????? It’s rockem sockem robots at this point. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/25 Full Review O&R m Way better than the first rebuild entry. The visuals are stunning at the end. The animation is even cleaner also. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review OverRex E The best of the 4, holy moly guacamole, peak animation for 2009, wow. The story advances differently, and man, its amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Ryan W Mostly the same as the show, but I liked the song near the end. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
