Dwight Brown Sepia Agatha Christie fans will be pleased. Aug 10, 2022 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times There are delicious moments in the final fifteen minutes of Evil Under The Sun, but what I especially liked about this Christie were the opening scenes the setup. Rated: 3/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Kathy Fennessy Seattle Film Blog Evil Under the Sun is more a product of the expansive time it was made than the more austere time it was written, and that's a big part of its appeal: the 1980s in full, indulgent flower. Rated: 3/4 Jun 7, 2022 Full Review Frank J. Avella Edge Media Network Evil Under the Sun is a lush, clever, and entertaining gem that is more than worth the sit. Michael C The late Peter Ustinov's second portrayal of Hercule Poirot is a very good and entertaining movie. Ustinov is, as usual, terrific as the Belgian detective investigating the murder of a popular actress. Ustinov is once again helped by a terrific supporting cast which features the late Maggie Smith (Who is nothing short of excellent as usual.) and the late Roddy McDowall among others. The movie is also filmed very well with lavish filming locations and costume design. The best part of the movie for me was when Poirot explained what happened and identified the murderer. While I still believe "Death on the Nile" is the best film to feature Ustinov as Poirot (and the best film adaptation hands down), "Evil Under the Sun" is a very good movie that is definitely worth seeing. Agatha Christie's novel of the same title which is the basis for the movie is well worth reading too. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Ted B 4.0 stars; Back during the 1980s, it became popular to make big budget Agatha Christie murder plot movies starring a bevy of big-name actors and actresses of the time. This film definitely falls into that category. These movies were long (this one was about 2 hours), well-written, and the acting bar was set low for the acting performances (even though the actors were well-paid). The locations were always exquisite and well filmed. Here is where my bias (4 stars) plays a part. To a true mystery aficionado, anything that Agatha Christie writes is biblical. Therefore, my movie ratings of those star-studded spectacular Christie films such as "Death on the Nile" or "Murder on the Orient Express" will always reveal my bias. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Paul F I was never as keen on this than the more serious Murder on the Orient Express , but Ustinov and Finney are like apple and pears, pointless to compare them, such different approaches to acting and styles of production. Watching it again I think it stands up really well. The scenes with Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg are brilliant of course, but the whole cast are a class act, brilliant character actors happy to go along with the whole show . No one should take these films seriously as the plots are all convoluted and bonkers, as adapted from novels of their time. There is also Nicholas Clay in his gorgeous prime; sadly I think only the amazing Maggie is left standing now . Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Rick O Weakened by the writing. The most convoluted and unlikely actions and predictions by the murderer. Ustinov and Maggie Smith are great, as is Diana Rigg. James Mason is wasted. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review HR G Sir David Suchet is the spitting image (looks and speech) of Poirot from the books but for me, Sir Peter Ustinov will always be THE Poirot in Evil Under the Sun and Death on the Nile. Amazing cast all around. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Aender S Peter Ustinov is just great as Hercule Poirot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
