Simon T The biggest problem with Evita is that it has next to no plot. Poor girl sleeps her way to the top, then takes a long time dying. That's it. With music. Lloyd Webber has no off button, so he keeps repeating a handful of Big Tunes, sticks in a key change so he can milk it even more, then hands it to his orchestrator to generate a Latin-American vibe. He's lucky here to have Alan Parker inject some grit and genuine beauty, although even he can't rescue a moribund second half. Jimmy Nail provides the only humour as the washed-up Magaldi: he also gives the best performance. Aside from Madonna's stellar all-digital 1989 record album, "Like A Prayer", I believe Evita is her crowning achievement. Despite Madonna's omnipresence, Antonio Banderas is the glue that holds it all together. You can watch Evita over and over, mainly for the music. The narrative is sung from start to finish, which feels strange at first, but it quickly envelops you with its stunning visuals. Madonna transforms into Eva Perón, and she’s surprisingly convincing in this role; you forget about the artist and become captivated by Eva. The music is dramatic, and Madonna does an amazing job belting out demanding notes. I actually cried at the end because it delivers such emotion and realism, which is impressive considering it’s entirely sung. A true masterpiece for musical lovers!
