Critics Consensus

Evita sometimes strains to convince on a narrative level, but the soundtrack helps this fact-based musical achieve a measure of the epic grandeur to which it aspires.

It's just a sluggish, contradictory mess, a drably "realistic" Latin-revolution music video driven by a soundtrack of mediocre '70s rock. Go to Full Review

With one of the most dazzling screen chassis in years, Evita is definitely worth a look -- maybe even two. But don't look under the hood. Go to Full Review

In the end, Madonna’s performance helps save Evita from being the irrelevancy it might have been and transforms it, instead, into something very much alive and strangely moving. Go to Full Review

After all the painstaking verisimilitude the movie neglects its characters. Evita the woman shrinks. It's the background we react to-especially the crowd, with its power to applaud or boo. Go to Full Review

No matter how great all the constituent elements were, [it couldn't] survive the kind of stiff, wholly artificial and forced performance that Madonna gives. Go to Full Review

Thomas H. @Hitman777gb Dec 5 Madonna is perfect in this musical. I don’t even like most musicals and I loved this See more Koi P @hopep Oct 15 Perfection. Thought-provoking. Emotional. Amazing music. Fantastic performances. See more Simon T Jul 5 The biggest problem with Evita is that it has next to no plot. Poor girl sleeps her way to the top, then takes a long time dying. That's it. With music. Lloyd Webber has no off button, so he keeps repeating a handful of Big Tunes, sticks in a key change so he can milk it even more, then hands it to his orchestrator to generate a Latin-American vibe. He's lucky here to have Alan Parker inject some grit and genuine beauty, although even he can't rescue a moribund second half. Jimmy Nail provides the only humour as the washed-up Magaldi: he also gives the best performance. See more JM M Jul 3 Just watched this after 20 years. What a slog. The good: production values and songs. The bad: Madonna, Madonna, Madonna. For everyone saying "It's her best acting performance" . . . that's a pretty low bar, no? She's so wooden and her voice is nowhere near the level Evita demands. Also, Jonathan Pryce is a great actor but miscast here. See more I. S. W Feb 21 When I first saw this movie, as an opera lover, I quickly realized that I was in opera heaven! The melodies are infectious and the semitones dramatic and intriguing. Aside from Madonna's stellar all-digital 1989 record album, "Like A Prayer", I believe Evita is her crowning achievement. Despite Madonna's omnipresence, Antonio Banderas is the glue that holds it all together. You can watch Evita over and over, mainly for the music.
