By its nature, “Exit 8” is sparse and repetitive. But in the not-especially-decorated annals of video game adaptations, it’s one of the most compelling and clever meldings of the two mediums -- cinema and gaming -- we’ve seen yet. Go to Full Review

In its third act, this otherwise effective thriller about getting stuck does end up spinning its own wheels. Go to Full Review

It’s a claustrophobic and creepy premise, executed with economy and style. But by its nature, the film is also relentlessly repetitive, losing some of its oppressive potency by the third chapter. Go to Full Review

Director Genki Kawamura inventively uses playful imagery, repetition and vivid side characters to create a deeply unnerving situation. Go to Full Review

2026’s best video game adaptation ... With his attentiveness and precision, plus the thoughtful ways that he expands upon his source material, it couldn’t be more apparent that Kawamura was a player of The Exit 8 first. Go to Full Review

I'm sure it has deep existential meaning, but it's enough just to sit back and admire the craft of writer-director Genki Kawamura. Go to Full Review

Alexander Ortiz 1d This is how a video game movie is done! Tense, dreadful, cathartic and emotional. Exit 8 excellently builds upon the simple premise of the game and adds a much needed emotional throughline to translate it into film well. It was fantastic See more Aura 2d Tense and satisfying at once. I really enjoyed this one! See more Weasel Cheese 2d Spoiler alert: This thing is empty of any meaning other than "abortion bad." That's the whole thing, but it frames its moralizing in a game that I would have bailed on after the first 10 pointless minutes. The only good thing I can say about it is it's only 90 minutes of life wasted but really why waste 90 minutes? Its anti-choice propaganda wrapped in a walking simulator adventure game that goes literally nowhere. See more Brennan 3d boring, repetitive, and weirdly pro life See more JAMES C 3d Strange but very cool! See more Lytrell 4d Very creepy and interesting. I would call it more of a psychological thriller! See more Read all reviews
