One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd -- levitating, speaking in tongues -- her worried mother (Ellen Burstyn) seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job.

Tom Huddleston Time Out It remains genuinely unnerving to this day -- ridiculous in places, faintly despicable in others, but gorgeous to look at and possessed with a sense of absolute, ruthless gravity. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/23 Full Review Daniel S Let’s Be Honest: This Film Was Never Good—And Still Isn’t Let’s not kid ourselves—this was never a good film. It wasn’t good when it was made in the 1970s, and time has only added an undeserved sense of reverence. How it gained its reputation as a "classic" is beyond me. Yet, to this day, audiences flock to screenings of this mess while the Catholic Church continues to raise objections, seemingly out of habit. Here’s the truth: it’s not a great film, and it shouldn’t even be a controversial one. If anything, the Church is portrayed rather reasonably—"Your daughter is possessed? Really? This is the 20th century." Not exactly damning stuff. And yet, this clunky series of vaguely connected, often ridiculous horror scenes is somehow still taken seriously. Let’s talk about plot—or the lack thereof. Instead of a cohesive story, we get a grab bag of disturbing, occasionally silly moments stitched together under a flimsy premise. And then there’s the Devil himself—introduced with dramatic flair as the Big Bad, summoned by… a Ouija board. That’s right. The Prince of Darkness was just waiting around for a kid to ask him to play. His grand plan? Vomit green slime and make inappropriate comments. That’s it. This isn’t evil incarnate; it’s a drunk frat boy at a Halloween party. Honestly, throw a backwards cap on Regan and a Lakers jersey, and she could pass for the guy yelling at the keg line on pledge night. If I were Father Merrin, I’d be relieved. This is the worst the Devil has to offer? Pull up a chair, pop on Cheech and Chong, and wonder if Lucifer was cast out of Heaven not for pride, but for being the guy who wouldn’t stop lighting his own farts during movie night. As for the rest of the cast, their emotional range stretches from "mildly concerned" to "moderately disturbed." A few party scenes try to add color, but quickly crash back into the same grayscale mood. There’s a half-baked subplot about a priest losing his faith because his mother died. Another subplot follows an actress whose entire purpose is… unclear. And then there’s the traveling exorcist who apparently only finds demons in third-world countries—because apparently evil doesn’t hang out in boardrooms or private schools, just in the places that make for dramatic, dusty establishing shots. The only real dynamic presence is Regan/Satan, who cycles between looking uncomfortable during medical tests and grinning maniacally while performing her slapstick satanism. If you're watching this for the first time, do yourself a favor: watch it with a critical eye. Ask yourself what’s actually scary about this premise. Ask yourself why a cosmic force of evil chose to possess a suburban 12-year-old to cause a mess and throw a tantrum. Then go watch the only truly great Friedkin film: The French Connection.
