Panos Kotzathanasis HanCinema "Failan" feeatures an original and well-presented mixture of gangster film and romantic melodrama, although the fact that the last element is the one that eventually takes over, deprive it of becoming a masterpiece. Audience Member Choi Minsik delivers a very believable performance as Kang, an aging kkangpae (mafia) right-hand in desperate need of a way out of untimely and unfortunate circumstances beset by his superior. Incidentally, Kang marries a Chinese migrant to grant her residency status, but it proves to be a sham. This movie is about redemption, but also the permanency of past outcomes as they relate to the present. This movie will make you cry, but Choi also delivers some painfully hilarious fight scenes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This is probably in my top 10 fav list. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member "Everyone here is so kind, but you are the kindest of all". Too sad. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Most likely the greatest romance movie of all time. Amazing writing and superb acting, especially by Choi Min-sik, make this film a true work of art and emotional journey. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The greatest movie I've ever watched. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member My almost cried towards the end.... that essentially sums up how powerful this movie is. Cecilia has an almost divine screen presence, but it is Min-sik Choi's movie all the way. His character grows into you as the movie progresses. The movie hardly has any powerful scenes, but the narration and the way things unfold have such a huge impact. 'Failan' highlights the missed opportunities and a hopeless life of gangster, for whom everything in life goes wrong. After watching it, I felt that I was so lucky to have so many things in life. I don't think I would recommend Oldboy to anyone, but if there is one Min-sik Choi movie I would like to recommend, it would be this one. I and my friends put together a review for this movie at http://cubicletalkies.wordpress.com/2010/12/31/failan/ . Do check that out. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
