David Fear Time Out Rated: 5/6 Jan 18, 2008 Full Review Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times An exhilarating rush of a movie, with all manner of go-for-broke visual bravura that expresses perfectly the free spirits of [Wong's] bold young people. Rated: 4/5 Feb 14, 2001 Full Review Edward Guthmann San Francisco Chronicle Wong brings tremendous vigor and audacity to the effort, asking us to question the most basic rules of storytelling and commercial filmmaking. lena s this movie was very weird but interesting at the same time. I regret not knowing that watching Chungking Express would help me understand this movie more but well, whatever, I'll make up for that later. He Zhiwu reminds me a lot of Tyler Durden, and the camera work, especially at the beginning reminds me of Resident Evil 1, lol. I loved the overall vibe of this movie and the fact that all of it happened at night. I'll definitely re-watch it. The cover reminds me of Silent Hill 2, so that's cool. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Daniel L I loved everything about this movie. The cinematography & editing is superb, the loose, free, interweaving story is both genuine & engaging. They way this movie was able to immerse me in the nocturnal, underground life of hong-kong was in a manner unlike anything I've seen. My new favorite of Wong-Kar, and I will be sure to consume his other films ASAP. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review S. C Astonishing visuals thanks to the sets, lighting and cinematography with an absolutely breathtaking score and soundtrack. It's an absolute treat, lively, a dreamlike tale about a handful interesting characters which are portrayed by just the right cast. Lots of great use of light, color, locations captured in so many creative ways with changing lenses and filters. Dramatic, thrilling, vibrant and full of love, it is a pleasure for eye, ear and heart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/24 Full Review Mitchell B Visually and stylistically lively and beautiful, but theres not really much of a plot. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Dominik S Incredible music and visuals. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/23 Full Review Mikey H I was a bit let down. I was expecting this to live up to Chungking Express (a top 5 favorite of mine) and it just wasn't that. Nonetheless, Wong Kar-Wai still adds an incredible piece of cinema to his filmography.
