It has a short run time which is refreshing out alongside the other releases that consistently go above two hours. My whole theater was laughing at the dry pan humor and the out of time feel really made the movie very tense. It was a very enjoyable experience that will make you leave with a smile. It is a beautifully rendered look at the mundane life of two characters we desperately hope will find each other. There's a curious sense from the cinematography, style and cultural references of this being set in the 1970s. But for a few contemporary references, such as to the Russian-Ukraine war, you wouldn't know it's set in the 2020s. Gives a quirky and uncertain feel. The story is good and well-paced. I enjoyed the bleak comedy of it. There are a lot of themes here: exploitation of modern capitalism, hope and fear of future, loss of confidence in values, modern relationships to name a few. In the deadpan expressions of the characters (sometimes verging on catatonia), the stilted dialogue and bleak cityscapes evocative of atomisation I detected more than a note of Akerman. Would thoroughly recommend Fallen Leaves.
