Raquel Stecher The Movie Palace Podcast An emotional little drama that both taps into a real fear that was part of the consciousness of the time and gives the audience a bit of hope that if we trust science there could be a cure in the future. And it wraps it up with this sweet romance. Dec 19, 2022 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews The quiet film offers keen observations about workers, romance and bureaucracy. Audience Member In a nutshell, the Solax Studio film “Falling Leaves” is a silent classic about a girl named Winifred who is stricken with tuberculosis. When hearing the doctor say that she will die as soon as the last leaf falls, her baby sister Trixie does everything she can to prevent the leaves from falling. Even going as far as tying leaves back onto trees with string. It is a clever story that has a happy ending. Produced and directed by Alice Guy-Blance, this is one of those old silent gems that delves into the subject of loss. Little Trixie can’t bare the thought of loosing her big sister, and she would do anything to save her. Bless her heart. And even though we know that the doctor doesn’t literally mean that Winifred will die as soon as the last leaf falls, little Trixie however, does. She takes his declaration literally, and seeing as how this film is told from her point of view we can’t help but feel sad for her. We also feel the same want and urgency that this little girl feels to save the day. In short Alice Guy-Blanche did a really great job in bringing to life a story of a child who is faced with the possibility of losing someone she loves. With that said, there is but one problem with this film, and that is its pacing. When viewing this film you will notice that it goes by a little too fast. This may be a good thing if this was a comedy, but seeing as how it is meant to be a drama it makes the film feel a little off kilt. This isn’t a big problem of course but it does effect the flow of the story. And with out proper flow the film suffers. Regardless of this it is still a really great film to watch. It may have said pacing issues but one cannot deny that it has its own unique charm. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/20 Full Review Read all reviews
