Richard Porton Chicago Reader Endlessly infatuated with its own cinematic flamboyance, Paolo Sorrentino's latest aims for profundity but has no more substance than the average flashy TV commercial. Sep 29, 2017 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies Cuts a fine balance between the stylised and the austere. Mar 16, 2007 Full Review Tom Dawson BBC.com A single viewing doesn't do justice to this film's singular visual imagination. Rated: 4/5 Mar 16, 2007 Full Review Sam Jordison Film4 For many directors this would be counted as a considerable success, but from the director of The Consequences Of Love, it seems like a disappointment. It's smart, it looks great and there are fantastic characters, but the motive power just isn't there. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 16, 2007 Full Review Tom Dawson Total Film Wrangling the characters in vividly coloured tableaux, he dazzles the viewer with an array of enigmatic images. Rated: 4/5 Mar 16, 2007 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall The entire film is subdued, but film fans who are fed up with nonstop action will love it. Audience Member I like Sorrentino's way of film making. This is not his best piece but it was good, not super. We meet the weird, ugly old loanshark that lives with his mother in a apartment that look smelly. He falls in love with a stunning girl he shouldn't fall in love with. Naturally this is a interesting plot with huge room for playful solutions. This film is like a weirder, italian version of something the Coen Brothers could have come up with. I never felt it was superfunny but it's charming most of it's playtime. Enjoyable film that has some neat production and a great score - Sorrentino surely must have a great taste in music. "My last thought will be for you". Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Compelling, odd, sleazy, oh hell read a proper review. One of best films i've seen in a good long time Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member - come si fa a diventare disperati come te? - trascorrendo un'infanzia felice. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Great photography, good story & excellent soundtrack. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS is the best part of the movie :) Soundtrack is AWESOME!!!! well interesting movie, Geremia is very irritating character, and it is curious that how everybody hates him but still tells him all the details like willingly. I lolled in the scene when the girl knocks the door and tells the guy that he is not wearing underwear, and he faints...not quite sure if i felt sorry for the guy in the end... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Paolo Sorrentino is still one of Europe's most talented directors, but this doesn't hit the mark as well as his excellent 'The Consequences of Love' did. The problem is the messages are confused because of the flawed protagonist players. Laura Chiatti is too much the beauty queen she used to be, and plays in the film, to convey the darkness of her character. Giacomo Rizzo, despite perfectly looking the part as a Fellini-esque grotesque, never, as Sorrentino admits in the DVD extras, fully grasped the ambiguity of his role. Add a pretentious opening shot and the thrust of this film stumbles along unsatisfactorily for too long. That said, students of Italian culture will still recognise many pillars of that society - the old man still living with his mother, the embedded and counter-productive clientelism, the visual obsession with women as sex objects and the secretive and nefarious way power is wielded. But the ensemble suffers from the lack of strong audience association with the leads. Radically alternative endings merely add to the unfortunate confusion.
