Critics Consensus

The Family Man's earnest attempt to remind audiences that it's a wonderful life too often steers into schmaltz, although Nicolas Cage and Téa Leoni's romantic rapport adds a dash of sincere sweetness.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media Pleasant movie despite some predictability. Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Time Out It's rare that an American movie lets slip such a snobbish distaste for the humdrum lives of its blue-collar audience base, but of course it doesn't last. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Marrit Ingman Austin Chronicle A holiday film Joe Lieberman could love, unembarrassed by its wholesome, sugary pro-family message. Rated: 2/5 Mar 10, 2003 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times The Family Man proves it is indeed entirely possible to make a crowd-pleasing, highly commercial romantic movie with teeth which respects the audiences intelligence and doesn't spoon-feed them the same old predictable, recycled mish-mash. Rated: 4/5 Mar 10, 2022 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Crowd-pleasing sap. Rated: C Dec 20, 2020 Full Review Michael Nordine Not Coming to a Theater Near You Its emotional core makes it easy to appreciate as a classical (if not classic) entertainment. Audience Member Arguably close to a perfect film for what it is. Even shed a tear. Relatable, funny, intelligent, with great actors. They don't make em like this anymore. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Darío C Very underrated movie. Original, catchy concept, delivered in a very heart-warming story. Amazing cast. Beautiful, nostalgic movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Don D An underrated movie, it is touching, powerful, and convincing with amazing performances by Nicholas Cage and an irresitible Tea Leoni. Annie has to be the cutest little girl of all time. Great scenes with Don Cheadle, always-friend-of-the-hero Jeremy Priven, Josef Sommer, and Harve Presnell. The final scene at the airport brought tears to my eyes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Peter J The first time I watched The Family Man I thought it was great, I just watched it again and enjoyed it even more. The movie has held up for 20 years. It is a great movie, great story, great acting, great direction it is unique, creative, funny, it sticks with you after you watch it. It is one of Nicholas Cage's best acting efforts, Tea Leoni is amazing. One of those movies you can watch more than once. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Dustin P A very under appreciated movie, it should be a christmas classic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Julian P Yes, 5 stars, you read it right. Simple... It made me cry from start to finish, a pure vicerel reaction that requires 5 stars. Like Notting Hill, Like Love Actually, just total blub city the whole movie and I am an alpha male (albeit a mummy's boy alpha male) so surely it deserves it? It's one of those movies you have to try and I hope it does for you what it did for me, value every emotion you have. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
