Critics Consensus

The Family Man's earnest attempt to remind audiences that it's a wonderful life too often steers into schmaltz, although Nicolas Cage and Téa Leoni's romantic rapport adds a dash of sincere sweetness.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media Pleasant movie despite some predictability. Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Time Out It's rare that an American movie lets slip such a snobbish distaste for the humdrum lives of its blue-collar audience base, but of course it doesn't last. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Marrit Ingman Austin Chronicle A holiday film Joe Lieberman could love, unembarrassed by its wholesome, sugary pro-family message. Rated: 2/5 Mar 10, 2003 Full Review Natasha Alvar Hallmarkies Podcast It's a film that's trying to get you to think about what brings value to your life. [...] I also like that it's about second chances - you can walk away from certain things but there's also a chance to get back to them. Jan 5, 2025 Full Review Rachel Wagner Hallmarkies Podcast Makes you think about the different paths you could have taken in life. Sweet film Dec 24, 2024 Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Screen Rant The Family Man's premise is simple yet heartfelt and beautiful, with an aching sense of solitude and profundity permeating the film. MaryAnn C Though I have never liked Nicholas Cage, I do really love this movie..even enough to forget that he's in it. I guess never having a family, the movie kind of invites you in so you can dream for a little while..just a little while. Tea Leoni is great, and perfect for this role and I have to grudgingly admit that Cage isn't bad..as long as he's not singing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review Bernard D A really underrated Christmas movie. Strong cast, nice message. Sure it pulls off of Wonderful Life but it doesn't change the quality of the movie. The soundtrack is awesome as well. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Nevil M Fantastic suburban Christmas movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Landon J Nick Cage really does play himself in every movie. This one does play like a hallmark movie from start to finish. Fine, not good, not terrible, watch if you are in a holiday trance and need to be braindead for 2 hours. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Shannon B it's a great feel good movie. Most critics suck, in my humble opinion. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Matt W This has become one of my go to Christmas movies. It's a very tight story, hums along, no slow parts, great cast, direction. I love the message of the movie even though I chose the career path over the family life, I still can appreciate it. One of my favourite Nic Cage movies and Tea Leoni is great.
