      Audience Member French consistent style. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I absolutely loved FAMILY TREE, a very absorbing and tender drama about a family wrecked by their own disconnection to one another. The set-up has the classy, elderly Guy Marchand [in a quietly studied performance] refusing to attend his son's funeral much to the dismay of his younger son and it is from this point that the film unravels with a dignified air of resignation to reveal the underlying significance of his act, as well as to delve into a plethora of topics concerning families everywhere, some more subtle than others. Francoise Fabian is a standout as the patient, loving wife who holds the family together but inside is far more vulnerable and withholding. Although FAMILY TREE unfolds much like a play [which on stage would probably be very effective], the use of the massive family property, its acres of forest and the titular tree, as well as the seasonal time frame devised to develop the narrative [divvied into four parts over the course of a year] makes you realize how viscerally, poetically and visually the story best works on film.
