See more Sal D. @JustTheLaw Jan 19 I found the story of Roki more compelling than the rest of the characters but that may because the missing character, Tawi, is just dialogue without really any gravity even when conveyed by Lily Gladstone’s character, Tawi’s sister. I think the issue is the performances are staid and a bit underwhelming, considering the gravity of the plot. Also? Gladstone’s character does not particularly come across as the ideal protagonist- not exceptionally likable. Worth a watch but the potential of this film is not realized. Gladstone delivers a great performance, but the cast around her is too green to hold the scene. This is the challenge of the independent film voice, and the message is wrapped in a good, story solid — it just needed another 10 million dollars in production value for polish. See more spoko s @spoko Oct 3 Jax was a great character, well played by Lily Gladstone—I think better than in anything else I’ve seen from her. Her quiet, conflicted persistence really carries the film. Her bond with Roki is also compelling, in spite of the fact that Roki isn’t the strongest of characters. She’s sometimes just too naive, though I do think you could read that as a choice the character herself is making—clinging to naive hope as a kind of a survival mechanism. The way the movie plays its characters against larger institutions—custody battles, police systems, tribal bureaucracy—adds weight without overwhelming the personal story. One line from JJ stuck with me, about how this “happens to everybody.” His resignation, and Jax’s outright refusal resign herself, captured so much of what the film was doing. See more Logan D May 30 Realizing her sister may not return, Jax (Lily Gladstone) defies the law in order to care for the needs of her niece, Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson). Wow! This is the first film I've seen with Gladstone and she is just a stunning actress. I'm loving that so many strong roles are being given to NA actors and plots tied to their heritage. The relationship between Jax and Roki isn't one way but two. Jax needs Roki for stablity and Roki needs Jax to maintain her heritage. Most importantly is the love these two have for each other.
