I get that it's a celebration of what the Walt Disney company has been able to accomplish over 60+ years, but it's still so boring. I love "World of Color" and what can be done with music playing behind beautiful animation, but this just doesn't do it for me. Hopefully they don't come out with another Fantasia any time soon. Honestly, I would love to see a film that features Mickey Mouse prominently rather than just a small segment in these movies. Despite being shorter than its predecessor, Fantasia 2000 raises the level of emotion by betting on touching stories, representing the sadness and fears of ordinary people in many segments. Like the first film, it used the most innovative animation technology at the time: mixing hand drawings and computer graphics. I thought it was a bit of a cheat that they reused the entire Sorcerer's Apprentice segment, missed the chance to do a sequel.       In this returning classic in Walt Disney Pictures' animated extravaganza "Fantasia 2000," directed by James Algar and music by Paul Dukas, the versatile Mickey Mouse finds himself in over his head. Taking inspiration from the artistic style of Al Hirschfeld and the music of George Gershwin, director Eric Goldberg weaves a whimsical tale of Manhattan in the Jazz Age in "Rhapsody in Blue." Providing an answer to the age-old question, "What would happen if you gave a yo-yo to a bunch of flamingos?," director Eric Goldberg serves up a wacky and witty interlude. Director Pixote Hunt used abstract imagery and a beautiful pastel palette to depict a colorful tale of good versus evil in Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5." Director Eric Goldberg tells the story of a yo-yo-playing flamingo who stands apart from the flock in this watercolor-full interpretation of Camille Saint-Saëns' "Carnival of the Animals, Finale." Set to the familiar strains of Beethoven's classic symphony, director Pixote Hunt uses abstract imagery and a beautiful pastel palette to tell this tale of good versus evil. Director Hendel Butoy matched Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale about a beautiful ballerina and a brave toy soldier to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich's "Piano Concerto No. 2, Allegro, Opus 102." Set to the music of Ottorino Respighi and directed by Hendel Butoy, a pod of whales miraculously take flight when a supernova explodes above their iceberg-laden habitat in "Pines of Rome." Acclaimed conductor James Levine, whose 28-year association with the Metropolitan Opera has earned him a special place in the music world, was an active collaborator.
