I re-watched the original Fantastic Beasts today to prep for Crimes of Grindelwald and it made me realise that the only reason I gave that first film a positive review was because of Queenie Goldstein. She's just such a sweetheart. Her character wasn't the only thing I liked about that movie, but without her, it still gets pushed down into Rotten. So when they took her in this one and first made her a rapist and then a Nazis, I was uh... Not exactly stoked. But that's a personal thing, and I try to, at least partially, put that aside and review on things like technical aspect. And in that Avenue, Crimes of Grindelwald is an abysmal failure. This is not the outright worst film of the year, but it was definitely the worst one I've seen in cinemas for a long damn time.

This has a large canvas but the storyline is uneventful and misleading. This is a world building movie, nothing more. Depp is great and attempts to inject himself into the series, but he is missing for most of the film. Redmayne is sidelined for this film and all the hard work from the last film feel like nothing. Comparing this to the first is unavoidable and sadly this never feels like the fun filled film that was. I wanted a complete film with hints for the next, but this plays out like a saga film and offers little. Great cast are not allowed substance and this film is the least liked of the overall franchise. Too much of everything and offering nothing. 07/07/2019

Even if the first one lacked compelling characters, it at least felt like they were trying something different. This one just feels like a rehash while having too much plot.

What a disappointment! Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was such a waste of time that I could have slept right through and woken up just for the final 15 minutes and never missed a thing. For a die hard fan, I left the cinema feeling betrayed and milked by a greedy film studio and an author who should leave writing screenplays to real screenplay writers. The uneven pacing and poor direction gave me cause to yawn, The one thing that really got me irritated was the ensemble cast in this latest "universe". Sadly, it was one too many bad actors and terrible acting. I have to say Johnny Depp didn't fit in this universe at all, as his celebrity status came across as bigger than the character. You don't see Grindelwald, you just see Johnny Depp. Acting fail. Eddie Redmayne as the main lead Newt Scamander felt like a fly on the wall as CGI took over with all the myriad characters and subplots creating more meandering and tested my patience. Unless there's a change to the screenwriter and the director, I'm not watching the next segment. Don't waste my time.
