Critics Consensus

While an improvement on its predecessor, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is nevertheless a juvenile, simplistic picture that has little benefit beyond its special effects.

Dana Stevens Slate An off-brand superhero movie, the cinematic equivalent of one of those generic breakfast cereals with a badly drawn squirrel for a mascot. Sep 22, 2007 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The film's effects people perform many miracles, from draining the River Thames to ensuring that the Thing produces a convincing smile. But one thing they can't do is to make the unfailingly wholesome Mr Fantastic and friends worth worrying about. Rated: 2/5 Jun 30, 2007 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle Rise of the Silver Surfer is both relentlessly dull and curiously bombastic. Rated: 1.5/5 Jun 30, 2007 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Galactus cloud aside, this did feel like an organic extension of the original movie, with Johnny Storm, Thing, and Silver Surfer all being the standouts. Bentley M The opening scene of Silver Surfer making the world snow like in Egypt. Reed and Sue getting married is all the media cares about when there are weird things occurring around the world. Johnny blackmailing Reed to have a bachelorette party is funny but a little dumb for the fact that Johnny only cares about the party and not being there for his sister. When Reed became drunk and started talking about the universe to the “exotic dancers” was funny. Then the dance scene of Reed using his powers was also funny, but it did look weird. I also don’t like how Johnny blackmailing him to have the bachelorette party made tension grow through Reed and Sue. But Reed showing Sue that he cares by denying the General because he had a wedding was a nice way to fix what Sue just watched Reed doing. The look on Reeds face when Sue says her bachelorette party was wild was pure comedy gold. The way that Johnny acts in these early 2000’s movies I don’t like. He is too dumb and doesn’t think. I also hate how Reed actually makes the machine for the general. He is always going back on Sue and doing things he said he wouldn’t do. The joke Johnny made about Ben and Alicia was funny but it made me not like Johnny even more. The pastor having to stop every couple of words because the helicopter, Reed phone thing, and then when all helicopter malfunctions and falls. The wedding becoming ruined shows how the fantastic four will never be able to have normal live because something will always happen. The Johnny and Silver Surfer chase sequence is amazing from the photography to the CGI which isn’t half bad it is just a great scene. When Sue and Johnny switch powers was just another way to get Jessica Alba naked. I also don’t like Ben swapping with Johnny, because Ben just came to terms with his powers and he ruined that arc in like two seconds. I don’t like how doom just goes to Antarctica even though he is a criminal and just finds everything to go. When silver surfer turns around after doom shocked him my head said, “Oh, you wanna run it” I think Reed explained how each planet dies after the silver surfer goes there was explained nicely. The scene of the Fantastic 4 saving everyone on the Ferris wheel was awesome too. Reeds quick thinking after Johnny messed up was great. After the fight where all of the water is gone from the creator is crazy. I also don’t like how they just trust doom immediately and act like he never did nothing. Now I do like how Johnny is now thinking about the end of the line and how he doesn’t want to spend it without somebody. Sue telling Doom that she could kill him any second is another way to show she is the most powerful of the four members. Sue asking Silver Surfer why he is destroying the planet and him saying I have no choice was good. I feel for Norrin Radd because he doesn’t want to destroy planets he has too or else his planet gets destroyed. Now the government is experimenting on him because why not. I really hate this fart cloud that Galatus is in this movie. It just looks dumb. Of course doom ends up being a bad guy, like it is very predictable and he has no reason to wear the mask because he has no scars. This plot with doom is just dumb. I do like doom being on the board but the CGI where they kill general Hager is so bad I can’t even defend it. The fantastic car this movie is awesome and I do wish it was more comic accurate. Doom just not giving the board makes sense character wise because doom hates letting Reed be right but also then it is dumb because why wouldn’t you do it for the sake of the planet. When Johnny takes all of the team’s powers and flys up to doom is awesome. Johnny just done any know how to say it’s clobbering time right. And the CGI looks terrible and it makes me realize how good CGi has became since the 2000’s. Ben still helping Johnny by using a crane is nice too and doom falling in the ocean or river is a nice touch to the loss of doom. Silver Surfer saving Sue is also pretty predictable, but the silver surfer going into the fart cloud and stoping it was cool too. “This is the end for us both” was tuff and awesome. Reed and Sue getting married in china was nice and Johnny found a girl to love on. This is a 2.5/5 which looks bad but it was another dumb fun movie just a little worse than the first one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Uncle R. Although it is better than the first one, this movie lacks so much. It’s not comic accurate, it doesn’t make sense half the time, and it just… isn’t it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Joanna B It's all a bit of everything in one film. It's like they couldn't choose one trope so they went with all of them. It's sad really. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Ethan W. I liked the movie but galactus did not really do much Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/27/25 Full Review Cheryl T A great sequel to the first Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Sebastian D The Silver Surfer’s CGI design is striking, and a few action sequences offer fleeting excitement, but they can’t lift the film from its mediocrity. The villain is forgettable, and the tone never gels, making it a pale shadow of the Fantastic Four comics. It’s a watchable but uninspired sequel that falls short of the franchise’s potential, best left for diehard superhero completists. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
