What to Know

Critics Consensus

Far from the Madding Crowd invites tough comparisons to Thomas Hardy's classic novel -- and its previous adaptation -- but stands on its own thanks to strong direction and a talented cast.

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses Vinterberg's confident direction and understanding of the radical potential of Hardy's original material combines with the film's remarkable performances to render this well above the usual 'costume drama' book-to-screen adaptation. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Judy Berman Flavorwire ... the novel Thomas Hardy actually wrote would have made for a much more thrilling film. Sep 21, 2017 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online But I will say that the cinematography is lovely. The rest is just extremely forgettable. Rated: C Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Permeating with possibilities and charged with the right measure of passion in every engrossing layer, Vinterberg's film stands head and shoulders above the feeble likes of today's lesser efforts of cinematic literary romance. Rated: 5/5 Oct 13, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies There is just a great flow to Vinterberg’s version of the Hardy classic and its easy to fall into the beautiful period setting and the simple charm of the story. It also offers another example of Mulligan’s magic as an actress. Rated: 4/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Jason Adams My New Plaid Pants At just shy of two hours it stuffs in a miraculous amount of story and flies, simply flies, on a great big beautiful pair of gilded wings Jan 14, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Margaret N This is a chick flic, so strike one. The movie starts and blammo, you get no information about Bathsheba's circumstances. Yes, she works on a farm, we see that, but so what? Is life hard for her? Is she broke? Is she lonely? How did she come to be alone? Too bad, figure it out for yourself in 43 seconds because blammo! On to the next thing. Strike two. Hot guy next door digs her but he's awkward. Why is he awkward? How is such a hot guy alone anyway? Nope, too bad, just assume he is. Proposal, blammo, she says no even though it's clear she realizes he's hot and polite (an excellent combo in a man). This all takes about a minute and a half. On to the next thing. Slightly older rich guy just down the way. Great idea: let's send a romantic card to him even tho' we're not even mildly interested in him, and even tho' it's way out of character for her to do so. Proposal, blammo, she says no. Guy looks heartbroken even tho' he's only seen her once and barely said 12 words to her. Confused? Too bad. On to the next thing. Swing and a miss. Mind you, all this has happened in about 9 minutes, and the movie goes on like this at breakneck pace - practically the Cliff's Notes version of this movie. Schoenaerts and Sheen are well-cast and do a good job making you interested in them, but they only get about 5 lines of dialogue to do so. Then some other stuff happens, none of which make sense to the main character's supposed personality, and then before we know it, the hot guy is kissing Bath and they ride off into the sunset, and you realize 1. that the damn thing is over already and 2. you just watched a chick flic. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review Audience Member Portrays the bucolic bliss and tragedy of Hardy's novel brilliantly. A shame it doesn't quite stick to the storyline completely, which is probably one of the reasons it doesn't make every event quite as convincing as it deserves to be. Well worth a watch nevertheless. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Laura G Beautiful cinematography! Just gorgeous. Truly a treasure I absolutely love this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review stewart M Beautifully shot and edited with an excellent cast led by Carey Mulligan, who never disappoints, it is essentially a Victorian soap opera that takes the viewer on a circuitous journey from the opening shot to the inevitable (and predictable ) conclusion. If you are a fan of costume dramas you will not be disappointed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Slow moving. Her independence blurs good decision making and makes for a flimsy film instead of a love story. Not good. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
