In remote Siberia, the small village of Matyoroy, which is situated on an island, has been singled out for flooding to make way for a hydroelectric dam. While some of the villagers leave quickly and are relocated to bleak urban housing, a few of the island's residents, most notably the wilderness-worshipping Darya (Stefaniya Stanyuta), refuse to go easily, resulting in dramatic moments where the beauty of nature meets the sheer force of modern progress.
