For teenager Rain Burroughs (Madison Iseman), a diagnosis with schizophrenia means that every day is a struggle as she tries to figure out which of the disturbing images, harrowing voices, and traumatic feelings she experiences are real and which are all in her mind. But when Rain insists against her parents' (Katherine Heigl and Harry Connick, Jr.) advice that the shadows and cries from her neighbor's attic are hiding a dark secret, she enlists help from Caleb (Israel Broussard), the charmingly awkward new boy at school -- who himself may not be real. Written and directed by Castille Landon (After We Fell, After Ever Happy), Fear of Rain is a terrifying thriller that takes you inside Rain's mind as she confronts the frightening hallucinations of her imagination to determine whether there is real horror hiding right next door.

Rain’s life as an ordinary teenager with mental illness is not really teased out. It could have been an indie film that did not exploit mental health struggles to attract audiences interested in horror, or it could completely embrace the exploitation

This is totally ridiculous. I lasted less than 4 minutes. In the first sequence a young girl is lost in a forest and attacked by some perpetrators. Subsequently we are at an ER where a young struggles on a gurney with medical personnel. They immobilize her and then the doctor stabs the crook of her arm with a regular length needle which probably resulted in the needle coming out the other way! I can’t believe that a medical consultant reviewed the scene and gave his OK. Should I definitely quit? Watched another minute. Someone writes on the screen! Another hallucination? I will never know.

It was a little better than a Lifetime movie, with a limited budget, and a couple silly dialogue moments. But enough suspense and plot twists to make it worth the watch for free.
