Critics Consensus

Fear Street Part One: 1994 kicks off the trilogy in promising fashion, honoring the source material with plenty of retro slasher appeal.

Audience Says

It has more enthusiasm for its throwback setting than actual inspiration, but Fear Street's first installment does just enough to make slasher fans interested in its sequels.

Inkoo Kang Washington Post Deena and Sam's romance is a push-pull between two paper-thin characters whose relationship never gains the contours that make you care about its survival. Jul 30, 2021 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba 1994 leans very much on recognizable nostalgia to build a sense of place-hell, the movie opens at a mall!-before getting into the bloody business at hand. Jul 24, 2021 Full Review Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle This easy-to-swallow conceit lets Fear Street gleefully, bloodily romp around, channeling the "trashy low-brow horror" of the mass market paperbacks it honors. Jul 16, 2021 Full Review Lindsey Romain Nerdist The young cast is excellent. The lore points and witchy nursery rhyme hint at more twisted fun to come. And Janiak’s eye for crisp horror keeps things refreshingly propulsive and infinitely surprising. Gustavo R The first of the trilogy. Teen slasher movie with cute factor. I really liked the open ending ready for the second installment. And what a soundtrack ! 🍿🍿🍿🍿/5 on Netflix Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Birithivy Y Fear Street 1994 - 6.5/10. The Fear Street trilogy starts off with an okay first film which pays homage to 90s slasher films. In the town of Shadyside, the town has been marred by tragedy after tragedy over its history. As a murder happens in the town's mall, a new serial killer is on the loose and murdering the young people of the town. As a group of kids band together to try and solve whats happening, they end up finding that the town's history of violence might be interconnected with each other. This film, directed by Leigh Janiak, is a decent beginning to this Netflix event trilogy. As a slasher film, this movie is okay at best. There are some genuine scares and good scenes that invoke some terror, but the film feels too much of a rehash of other better slasher films. For the younger crowd, this R rated adaptation of R.L. Stine's hit series is a fun watch. For people who are familiar with the slasher genre, this movie is just a decent time passing watch. It does offer some interesting paths for where the series can go, but you would need to wait for where the series will go with the next instalments. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Audience Member It’s just boring and not fun or funny or entertaining the characters relationships are quite interesting tho Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Simon K Wow, where do I even start? Fear Street 1994 had potential, but it threw it all away like a bad mixtape. The coolest characters? Gone. The most annoying one? Saved. Yes, I’m talking about you, Sam. The logic behind these choices was as lost as the mall janitor after hours. The vibe was there, the music slapped, but the story? It tripped, fell, and didn’t bother getting back up. By the end, I was rooting for the killers. If you like being frustrated for 90 minutes, this one’s for you. But for me, it’s a hard pass. Should’ve called it “Fear Cheat 1994” because I feel robbed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Tyler P It is a great thing that this series was saved by Netflix [of course they have to screw it up somehow, a new installation in the series is coming under a different director as a standalone when Janiak's take on the material and interconnected lore is the whole reason the trilogy hits so hard for people]. A lovely supernatural horror steeped in the 90's that only becomes too play-listy during one particular changeup of songs in the early stretch. The only caveat is that, for obvious reasons of this being an interconnected trilogy thats story doesnt conclude in this film, the film feels incomplete. I give it a 5/5 and theres a 5 and another 4.5 that follow. This series and universe could become Netflix's answer to what the hell are they gonna do after Stranger Things and hawkins bid farewell in 2025 if they put Janiak back in the directors chair Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Mx S All 3 of these movies are perfection.
