Audience Member There is not enough good material in this stunt to sufficiently fill the 49 minutes. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A 50-minute TV movie done for a charity which gives scholarships to young adult cancer survivors, its hard to hate Ferrell Takes the Field. It helps that it has an easy going charm about it, where Will Ferrell alternates between being a genuinely decent guy and playing a cocky asshole on talking-head interviews. Most of the lines land, especially involving the Oakland A's manager Billy Beane, although Ferrell tends to let some drag out (notably one about how he names his pitches). Some of the games get the short shrift, which is unfortunate, but its a good time-killer for flying across an ocean. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review harrison r Not very funny, still watchable and had a few laughs, basically like an episode of Seinfeld Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member there is no sports movie better than a baseball movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review nick e It's rather short for a big day, and it may be edited pretty badly, but it stays afloat thanks to Ferrell's typical humor. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Further proof that he's always funny even in this unscripted format of an actual charity fundraiser. David Sims The Atlantic It's short on big laughs, but admirable nonetheless for [Will] Ferrell's ability to disappear into his characters. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Allison Keene Collider [Will] Ferrell is still of course very funny. But the short, whirlwind special seems to have left so much on the cutting room floor. Rated: 3/5 Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Jeremy Stahl Slate The HBO special has more laugh lines per joke than the mediocre-but-beloved Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, more heart than the funny-but-formulaic Blades of Glory, and more potential staying power than the crude and forgettable Semi Pro. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba For a documentary made for cancer survivors, it's more than enough to be adequately amusing. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Allen Barra The Daily Beast Ferrell Takes the Field is laid-back humor, affectionate towards the game and those who work in it. It's fun rather than funny. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Shane Ryan Paste Magazine The funny lines keep coming. Rated: 8/10 Sep 17, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews
