Alex S 6.5/10. Decent film that places focus on all sorts of different motives for fighting in the war and retells real events from the conflict. Characters are very well acted, the biggest flaws in the film are the generally underperforming writing and poor visualization of the progression of the battle. The low score is entirely undeserved and the many 'critics' and viewers who claim the film does not show a single confederate supporting slavery is a total lie and their perception of the motives for soldiers to fight is skewed and oversimplified by presentism teachings of history. In the south people fought for all sorts of reasons, including preservation of slavery for self interest, but also for revenge, loyalty to state over federal government, principles of local governance, etc. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review edward j Wonderful and factual movie, great acting, battle scenes, brotherhood of comrades in war, romantic era, but chess pieces looked plastic, not invented yet! It should have been wood to be accurate! A must see Civil War movie from the Southern viewpoint! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review Michelle S Really enjoyed it! Great cast and taught me alot as a Canadian. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/16/23 Full Review Ben B There were certainly opportunities to tell an exciting story, but unfortunately all that came out was a turgid story about honour. The fact that it takes over an hour before at least the action starts doesn't make it any better. All in all, a rather below-average account of the American Civil War. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/21/23 Full Review trevor t For a low budget film I really enjoyed this. Jason Isaacs is very good as General Breckinridge. It is good to see when film companies try to accurately display the Confederacy and the reason why people fought. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An insomnia evening. Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times An impressively rendered if decidedly old-fashioned retelling of the American Civil War's one-day Battle of New Market.
