Richard Kuipers Variety Deutsch raises the art of found footage assembly to stunning heights. The soundscape, ranging from bouncy electronica to throat singing, is a masterpiece in its own right. Jul 7, 2010 Full Review Manohla Dargis New York Times Part of the pleasure of the first sections is their relative straightforwardness, particularly "1-6," which, through artfully edited visual splendors - a talking skeleton, a walking cat, a spinning record - creates a graceful meditation on cinema as motio Rated: 4/5 Dec 4, 2009 Full Review J. Hoberman Village Voice Film Ist. a Girl & a Gun is not subtle, but its literalism -- which refines the avant-primitivism of older Viennese artists -- is its strength. Dec 2, 2009 Full Review Derek Smith Tiny Mix Tapes Using clips mostly from obscure, silent, and often explicit films, along with quotes by Plato, Hesiod, and Sappho, Deutsch constructs his own unique history of love, lust, desire, and violence on the silver screen. Audience Member The whole concept of cinema is to tell stories with pictures. This film holds on to that thought and takes pictures and clippings from many different (old) movies and connects them together with mixed types of music and tricks of light. This kind of setting can work out - if there's enough variation to keep it interesting. To me that is where this film fails - it takes only a very short time before the initial pace wears out and the scenes and clippings start to stretch longer than they should be. The ending result is downright boring. The actual story told isn't that bad and the clipping used match that story pretty well, but that in itself isn't enough. 4 out of 10 clips and scenes Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a good film, but unfortunately, it was a bit boring and not so comprehending while I watched it. Later on, when I thought about it more it kind of started to make sense. But still, it wasn't my cup of tea. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
