      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Finding Steve McQueen's title invites thoughts of old-school action classics, but this energetic heist picture is disappointingly thrill-deficient.

Audience Member Good story, true story. It's undone a little though. The producers and director could have used some tricks to make it more suspenseful and they just didn't. There's no depth to the main characters as well that make you invested in the outcome of the story, but, it's a good enough comedic crime thriller. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member In the 70's, a dedicated Steve McQueen fan, Harry (Travis Fimmel) takes part in the robbery of a bank in which millions of dollars of illegal contributions to Nixon's campaign have been deposited... Potentially suspenseful heist movie is interspersed with flashbacks and an upside-down love story that fits awkwardly into the rest of the film. Inspirations such as "Bonnie and Clyde" are more than obvious, especially in the visual part, but the movie leaves a lukewarm impression overall. Although, Travis Fimmel is solid as a character who is probably 180 degrees away from his character in "Vikings". Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I knew the story of the dishwasher bank robbers before watching this movie, but not the intimate details. I was cracking up all through out the flick at these guys. If you hate constant cursing: my wife, don't watch. It was good through and through: from acting to script. I cannot believe how many Aussie's are in the movies for such a small pop but as my wife says (she is an Aussie) they take the arts serious down under.. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film and could have watched it again, straight away. Great performances with a true, interesting story-line and for me it's iconic. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review paul d This little gem of a movie tells a fascinating true micro-story forever buried in the background of very big, consequential events. The movie is a sweet, tender look at the people involved and also is a great portrayal of America is the 70's and 80's. The acting is impressive. The pacing of the film and its brevity stand out in an era of bloated superhero sequels filled with endless special effects. Well done ! Cath Clarke Guardian This really is an uneventful film, edited into two time frames to disguise how under-plotted and underwritten it is. Rated: 2/5 Nov 11, 2020 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com Finding Steve McQueen could have used more of the galvanizing spirit of its patron saint, but there's also much to recommend here, in particular its light-hearted energy. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 15, 2019 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter Unfortunately, despite the fascinating story that provides its inspiration and a solid cast, the pic provides neither sufficient thrills nor humor to make it anything more than a minor diversion. Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Ventana Indiscreta It favours scenes of funny interactions between characters, with funny one-liners [...], and Travis Fimmel acting almost as "drunk" as in 'Warcraft'. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Based on the true story of the biggest bank heist in US history, this film takes a sassy approach that keeps things light and amusing. Rated: 3/5 Nov 25, 2020 Full Review Callum Crumlish Daily Express (UK) Ultimately, this stylish and well-shot film has a fantastic pair of leads, a great premise, but absolutely no heart.
