Andrea Thompson Chicago Reader Much like the source material, there’s a whole lot of seriousness in this seemingly fluffy love story, with discussions of racism, classism, and body dysmorphia swirling around the romantic tension Austen is still revered for centuries later.. Jun 20, 2023 Full Review Edward Porter Times (UK) The characters deserve more autonomy: they're a likeable bunch and the film's best asset. Rated: 3/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Kim Booster is the star of the show, and a genuine find. He trained in advertising and comedy in Chicago, became a stand-up comedian and moved to New York. His script is nuanced, funny, right up-to-the-minute with its fads and jargon, and very pointed. Rated: 4/5 Jun 16, 2022 Full Review Matthew Creith Matinee With Matt With hijinks and true-to-life depictions of sex, drugs, and conflicting personalities amongst the specifically gay male community, Fire Island is a treat full of humor and romance. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Adam Manno The Daily Beast Fire Island still triumphs as a playful and sometimes heartwarming movie, even if it doesn’t quite climb out of the sandpit it dug for itself... Sep 13, 2022 Full Review Zoë Rose Bryant Loud and Clear Reviews Fire Island is a riotous modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice that simultaneously offers revolutionary representation for diverse LGBTQ+ leads in romcoms. J M There aren't a lot of huge laughs here - in fact, I'm not sure if I laughed out loud once. But what it does have is a lot of wit, a lot of charm and a sense of family. And it's gotta be the most unique adaptation of Jane Austen ever made! It also has a star-is-born performance by Booster whose charisma practically jumps off the screen. Considering he also wrote the script, this is a guy to watch. I appreciate that the film digs a bit deeper than you might originally expect, touching on subjects such as body positivity, parental acceptance and self-esteem. I found myself surprisingly moved on a couple occasions. The movie relies far too much on narration, which is a personal pet peeve. And supporting performances by Matt Rogers and Tomas Matos, likable as they are, feel very one-note and tend to detract from the humor rather than add do it. The script has some wonderful cultural references, and a game of Heads Up! is particularly funny. This is more smiles and chuckles and feel-good moments than boisterous guffaws and side-splitting laughter, but when the screenplay and characters are this strong and appealing, that's just fine with me. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Alec B Mildly amusing in places but feels too safe (evidenced by the banal platitudes that the characters often speak instead of real dialogue) and a little underwritten. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Philip P Fun, really enjoyable movie with wit and sass! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review Alec B Inspired by Austen's "Pride and Prejudice", Fire Island has all the makings of a modern-day, queer Jane Austen love story. Through its authentic storytelling and relatable characters, the movie offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of a group of friends as they spend a transformative summer on the iconic gay destination. While some may find the pacing occasionally slow, the film's emphasis on genuine human connections and the exploration of personal struggles creates a poignant and resonant narrative. With its beautiful cinematography capturing the picturesque setting, Fire Island immerses viewers in both the physical and emotional landscapes of its characters. The movie's exploration of LGBTQ+ experiences and the challenges of embracing one's true self adds depth and relevance to the story, making it a charming and hilarious addition to the gay rom-com genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/23/23 Full Review Gabriel M One of the worst movie I've seen recently Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review Matheus S i love this movie hahahha Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
