When a commercial shoot goes terribly wrong, Rex, Hollywood's biggest canine star, goes missing and is presumed dead by his handlers. Rex takes refuge in a row of lofts, but the structure catches fire, and Rex makes a death-defying leap into a fire captain's (Bruce Greenwood) arms. The man's son, Shane (Josh Hutcherson), becomes Rex's reluctant new master, and the firefighters adopt the dog as their mascot. Trouble looms when Rex's handlers try to get him back.

Critics Consensus

Firehouse Dog's cute premise is ruined with endless fart and poop jokes, and an overlong run time.

James Bramble Little White Lies The all sub-plot story is a veritable self-help manual for tweenies-a sort of Se7en for ages seven-and-up-with greed, pride, sloth and envy bested by humility, team work and fair play. Jul 20, 2007 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard Take the kids and have a nap in the dull bits. Rated: 2/5 Jul 20, 2007 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) It may sound like cute family entertainment, but the dog's no good - he's unappealing and looks depressed. Jul 20, 2007 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...an exceedingly hit-and-miss endeavor that is, in the final analysis, foiled by an often palpably overlong running time of 111 minutes... Rated: 2/4 Apr 4, 2023 Full Review Joshua Starnes ComingSoon.net Firehouse Dog is a run of the mill kids film. Adults will be fairly bored by it, and how many kids like it depends on how much they like goofy animal tricks. Starring Josh Hutcherson as the young owner of a firehouse dog, who used to be a movie star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/23 Full Review John P Funny, silly at times, heartwarming, predictable, feel good! Great movie for any kids 7 to 12. And yes, there's lots of jokes about farts, dog farts. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review robert p Too many crass jokes and unrealistic happening make this one rotten score! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A great tale of true friendship between a boy and his dog from the 2000s decade. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/21 Full Review Audience Member I don't really remember much about this movie but I do know that, while better than your average animal-starring family comedy with a decent premise, the movie relies too much on toilet humour and the talents of the actors are underutilized. Plus, it's forgettable...so yeah, there's that. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
