Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader This jubilant, celebratory 45-minute film holds up amazingly well. Feb 5, 2005 Full Review Susan Sontag The Nation Flaming Creatures is a triumphant example of an aesthetic vision of the world -- and such a vision is perhaps always, at its core, epicene. But this type of art has yet to be understood in this country. May 2, 2024 Full Review Dan Callahan ToxicUniverse.com Jack Smith's Flaming Creatures took the avant garde to a new level. Ruairi M Wrong film, I haven’t ever seen this one, apologies. Thought I was reviewing something else. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Eitan D An "artistic" movie that is a jumble of uncoherent images that don't mean anything and don't evoke any special feelings Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/21 Full Review William L The best thing about arthouse cinema is that there are no rules. It's also the worst thing about arthouse cinema. Flaming Creatures is visually washed-out (to the degree that it's hard to even see what's going on) and strange, featuring a nonsensical storyline and a cast of characters of ambiguous gender that seems more intended to create shock value than anything else. Call me unsophisticated and a mindless consumer of popular big-studio film, but most of what this genre has to offer does nothing for me, particularly the New York experimental scene of the '60s; it's bizarre weirdness pretending to be something more substantial. The best thing about this film is that it's mercifully short and at least tries to do something different. (1/5) Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/27/21 Full Review s r 1001 movies to see before you die. This one shouldn't be on the list. It was Avant- garden ridiculousness. If you're really curious, the first 10 minutes will suffice before you turn it off. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review david f A very experimental film without story, characters, or plot. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review william k Both aesthetically appealing and provocatively appalling experimental short remains controversial to some, but also arguably is considered a classic in its own right.
