Audience Member Brilliant animation! One of a kind! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Yo it's soul... I FREAKING LOVE THIS SHOW. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member FLCL (2001): An extremely surreal cumming of age story that is as confusing as adolescence itself. The Surrealism is grounded with a strong slice of life atmosphere. The soundtrack is incredibly uplifting, yet down to earth. Although the show is sometimes hectic, it still maintains the chill vibe of a slice of a slice of life story. Much like the adolescent protagonist, you are often simply along for the ride. This tonal balance between mundane and insanity is unique to FLCL. Notably, the english voice acting was done with great care and attention, and it shows. The goal of the show was to experiment with newer animation tech. As a result, the creators had extreme liberty, and were given permission to have fun and take risks. And Since it's only six episodes, they had plenty of time to polish it, and create a true masterpiece. Writers did not take the show too seriously, often adding set pieces for reasons like "I just liked robots". Each episode had various guest animators, as well as individual scenes being animated differently as an homage to other popular animators. It's easy to assume these changes in animation style were intentional, and not the result of different animators, because of the skill and consistency of the animators (aside from a few scenes that stand out for humorous effect). All of these different artists came together under director's heartful and unifying vision.I believe FLCL to be a rare case of "lightning in a jar." This is my critique of FLCL (2001) before watching the newer FLCL Progressive, and I felt like it would be a good time to articulate what made the show so great. I've heard good things about sequel, but I wanted to write about the original first, before it becomes retroactively tainted for better or for worse. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Extremely detailed, creative, and funny, FLCL is one of the best anime I have ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member My all-time favorite anime. If you see it and say it doesn't make sense, wait about 10 years... maybe more... you'll see it. Whatever it is. And if you see it and say you understand it? The same applies. Also. Watch it again. And then again. And then again. Etc. Understand it completely or don't understand it at all... it doesn't matter. Do you like it? Then rewatch and like it more and more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member "FLCL" is a true and honest to god masterpiece. From the crazy story to the memorable characters, the great art style and the endless amount of personality, "FLCL" did more in 6 episodes than most shows could do in 100. Ranking alongside the likes "Cowboy Bebop," "Trigun," and "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," this is easily one of the best shows the anime genre has ever seen.
