This documentary follows the young men and women of Israel, most of whom serve several years of mandatory military service once they turn 18. After completion of service and receipt of a discharge bonus, many of the former soldiers retreat to northern India to regroup from their experiences. For 90 percent of those who go, the trip becomes a drug-fueled attempt to regain their former selves. Director Yoav Shamir explores this practice and how the Israeli government attempts to stop it.

Audience Member Such an interesting look into a situation I had no idea about. Disillusioned Israeli youth go to India upon discharge from compulsory military service. There, they find/lose themselves. It's an absorbing story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member If you don't think this is heavy then good for you. It left me mentally drained. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member [28th Atlantic Film Festival] Flipping Out follows soldiers from Israel who, after serving a mandatory 3 year sentence in the army, go to India to lose themselves in a culture of drugs. This is strictly an impartial view of what is happening, which makes it difficult to rate. Some of the most compelling moments (the gentleman who runs the anti-drug safehouse being shown high) are there for only moments. The imagery seems to be a critique on the government of Israel for not doing nearly enough for these emotionally wounded kids. Your enjoyment will depend on your interest level in the subject matter. For me, it wasn't wasted time, but it was hardly enthralling either. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
