John J. Puccio Movie Metropolis I can't say I had a great time with 'Follow That Camel,' but it's all clearly in good fun. Rated: 5/10 Mar 17, 2012 Full Review Read all reviews

DanTheMan 2 A flawed and otherwise ill-advised attempt at attempting to cater a British institution for the Yanks, Follow That Camel, like its predecessor, ditched the iconic prefix for its initial release. But where Don't Lose Your Head still felt like a pure Carry On from the get-go, here it feels like an afterthought, a failed experiment to appeal to an audience who wouldn't grasp this saucy knockabout humour. While there are still some chuckle-worthy moments, not every line is a winner, however, there's at least a bit of experimentation with montages, bigger stabs at physical comedy and even some strands of dark humour, yet the film has that early entry issue of feeling more like an episodic series of skits and sketches rather than a carefully plotted and cohesive narrative. The ultimate hiring of Phil Silvers is a huge detriment to the film; in addition to costing the production a fortune, he is a poor man's stand-in for Sid James, running around shouting many of his lines with all the subtly of a bull in a china shop. It feels like he's trudging through the film merely for the paycheck, reading his lines off cues cards and inhabiting an entirely different brand of crass humour that sits awkwardly with the pun-rich camp of the usual team who still fully commit despite some noticeable holes in the production, as good as Silvers may be, it's just not Carry On. Follow That Camel isn't outright awful however, there's some fun in seeing the production desperately trying to pretend that Camber Sands is the Sahara and weirdly succeeding but the film unfortunately feels a bit too much like Jack for my tastes, burdened with confusion with no amount of heaving bosoms and revealed rumps to save it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Liz S I had to switch off half way through so predictable and storyline weak. Phil Silvers American what is he doing there as Sgt Billy and no explanation of German occupation with Kenny Williams as a German officer. Shame I endured half of it for the sake of my Carry on collection Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Audience Member if Harry H had been in the Silver role this wouldve been brilliant. Breslaw and Butterworth were outstanding back up Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review bill t Not a bad Carry On film, though not their best. Phil Silvers is along for ride.. somewhat odd, but okay. This film actually has some pretty good lines. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Has its moments but generally not that funny, or interesting. A young English gentleman is falsely shamed at cricket match and, as a result, runs off to join the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. His sergeant is a lazy, scheming, pleasure-over-duty sort and this leads to some interesting escapades. Meanwhile, a local warlord is intent on attacking the Legionnaire's fort... Regarded as an honorary Carry On movie, this movie is mostly quite silly and uninteresting. The jokes are hardly plentiful or that good, though some do hit the mark. Doesn't really work as an adventure movie either - quite dull and unoriginal in that regard. About the only thing that keeps this going are the hijinks and schemes of Sergeant Nocker, played by Phil Silvers. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Jim Dale was really starting to shine by this time. Rare in this series but the story was also good.
