A new fascist regime takes hold in Italy, though the people of Fontamara, a small, isolated village in the mountains of central Italy, are completely unaware of the changing political climate. The fascists send a representative to the town to assert their rule and impose a curfew, but it greatly limits the townspeople's ability to work. Berardo (Michele Placido) needs to make enough money to buy his own land so that he may be a worthy suitor to Elvira (Antonella Murgia), so he leaves for Rome.
