s r An overview of film critics over history. Informative and simple. Saw it on TCM. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review dave s For the Love of Movies covers the history of film criticism from the early 20th century to modern day. While it is certainly entertaining, it is dragged down by a lot of congratulatory back slapping as movie critics praise one another repeatedly. Instead of simply gushing over their love of film, it would have been of interest to provide more detail regarding what exactly individuals are looking for when passing judgement. Despite looking a little dated, it is, at times, an interesting peak into how the business has evolved over the years. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Nothing groundbreaking, but it is something that's insightful and intriguing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member For the Love of Movies is a lovingly made but dated and superficial documentary. Many of my heroes were interviewed! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a very educational and very entertaining look at the history and rise of film criticism, even though the documentary feels like it wants to end sooner than later. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting doc that will appeal most to those who either are, or are hoping to one day become, professional film critics. It's a bit of a downer as it more or less leaves you with the notion that film criticism is only something you can break into accidentally, so why try? On the other hand, with blogging and online magazines so popular now, who the hell can't watch a movie and write their opinion of it on the internet? You just may never get paid for that opinion. Joe Leydon Variety For all its attempts to offer an expansive and exhaustive historical account, the [documentary] is riddled with glaring gaps and facile transitions. Jul 22, 2014 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe Rated: 3/4 Nov 24, 2011 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher [W]hat we see here is that film criticism as an intellectual free-for-all is not something new to the Internet era but an inherent - and probably necessary - facet of the craft from the beginning. Feb 13, 2021 Full Review Harvey S. Karten Compuserve A survey course on the history of film criticism will introduce even professional critics to names that they do not already know and will be an eye-opener for all who want to know more about the background and current status of movie reviewers.
