Critics Consensus

Difficult to watch but ultimately all the more rewarding for it, Fort Tilden offers an intriguing calling card for writer-directors Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers.

Alison Willmore BuzzFeed News Fort Tilden is all the hipster satire you can handle, and maybe more. Nov 10, 2015 Full Review Nathalie Atkinson Globe and Mail Tucked in among the longueurs are moments of savage satirical virtuosity that pinion the zeitgeist. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 21, 2015 Full Review Bruce DeMara Toronto Star A story with a distinctive New York sensibility, filled with all kinds of strange urban creatures who are variously self-involved, superficial, rude and/or downright nasty. Rated: 3/4 Aug 20, 2015 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages A refreshing and dryly-hilarious glimpse into life at a certain time in a certain place, Fort Tilden brilliantly captures the “struggles” of two women who are uncertain of their roles in life. Aug 2, 2023 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse What begins in the shallow end of the story pool ends in the deep end, showing empathy for characters who, themselves, have little of that virtue. Rated: 4/5 Feb 3, 2021 Full Review Brigid Presecky FF2 Media The simplicity and relatability of the premise allows the comedy to take center stage, with Clare McNulty and Bridey Elliot perfectly executing their Brooklynite alter egos. Eric S Fort Tilden is a copycat imitation of creative ideas from Lena Dunham's Girls. Dunham's Girls used a very specific type of character that Fort Tilden imitates (young, privileged, hip but self-centered New Yorkers). If a stereotype was used in Girls, it gets reused in Fort Tilden. Girls used nudity but not as the scene's focus, Fort Tilden copies that. Girls used the characters selfishness as a comedy device, Fort Tilden copies that. Girls characters hit bottom in a way you'd feel sorry for them, Fort Tilden copies that. One big difference: Dunham's Girls characters were at times borderline unlikeable, but the Fort Tilden lead characters are decisively unlikeable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/21/23 Full Review Marla C I saw the movie had good reviews and decided to watch it. I think it is a fantastic depiction of the shallow and pretentious life of many modern urbanite women. The characters of Harper and Allie are very well played by the actresses. They accurately portray the careless disdain for others, the shallow knowledge, the social pretentiousness, that you see every day in many people in big cities, and after a short while you want to keep watching to see how the story ends badly for them. Yet there is a little something you like about them as well. In the end, they have ample opportunity to learn but they don't and they keep spinning around in their fake reality. A very good caricature of a subject you don't see criticized much. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't waste your time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the worst film I have ever, and will ever, see. The main characters are insufferable and don't act in a way anybody with an eight of a brain would (letting their bikes get stolen, leaving kittens in a trash can, etc.) 90% of the plot could be skipped if the protagonists weren't such idiot assholes, and I don't think that's very good. I don't get any entertainment from watching two douchebags bicker with each other and everyone they meet for an hour and a half. If, for whatever reason, you feel like you'd enjoy this, Jerry Springer and Maury Povich have got you covered. For a comedy, it's incredibly unfunny. I'd be more amused watching an ISIS beheading video while learning that everyone close to me is dead. There isn't a single situation in the film that could be considered even remotely humorous. I understand that the movie's supposed to be some kind of satire on modern Millennials/Gen X'ers, but that doesn't excuse how awful it is. The cinematography is nice, but that doesn't make up for the rest of the film. You wouldn't enjoy being beaten to an inch of your life just because your attacker was dressed nice, now would you? I only passively watched this film, and I still feel like I've lost 90 minutes I will never get back. I created this account specifically to make this review, such is my hatred for this movie. I would not recommend watching Fort Tilden, and I wouldn't wish the viewing experience on my worst enemy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review kris i based on bert's review of my review. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Stewart E The most surprising part of the movie was when the girls took their tops off and it turned out that the one who was supposed to be "less attractive" had the beat tits by far. (although neither wee attracted, except for the attractiveness of youth in general) It's about 2 terrible, self centered people who don't learn from their experiences. Like the characters in "Girls" This is not a story of redemption for sure. This movie is not for everyone but I don't regret having seen it.
