Alison Willmore BuzzFeed News 03/04/2016
Rose doesn't force his monster into a metaphor for anything; he just brings the narrative into the present day and allows it to resonate as one about the people who are shunted to society's outskirts and treated as less than human. Go to Full Review

Highly intelligent and deeply wounding, Frankenstein stands as a stark reminder that in these so-called enlightened times, we still haven't made it that far. Go to Full Review

Mary Shelley's 19th-century tale about man playing God gets a fascinating 21st-century refit from Candyman director Bernard Rose. Go to Full Review

Bernard "Candyman" Rose's Frankenstein is the dreamy, gory, and strangely moving modern take on the most famous monster story of all time for which we didn't even realise we'd been waiting. Go to Full Review

Its use of gore, its plot rage and originality place the movie above the average level. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

An offbeat updating of Mary Shelley's classic Gothic tale that strikingly mixes grind-house gore with high-brow ideas. Go to Full Review

John K. @EspressoFilms Oct 19 I don’t understand how this is ranked so high, it was terrible. See more Kimberly P 07/07/2024 Very slow... found it rather strange.. watched it because it got good reviews. . Very sorry I watched 1/2 if it... stopped wayching.. See more Nathan H 04/08/2024 Surprisingly faithful rendering with good scares and great performances overshadowed by too much guts and gore, but you can tell everyone involved had fun. See more Tom S @Acewrite13 03/21/2023 A fascinating update on the classic trope set in L.A. that modernizes the tragic theme with genuine emotional punch. The director Bernard Rose, who directed Candyman and Immortal Beloved, does wonders with a low budget and manages to be horrifically gory, but also poetic and dreamy. Loved it. See more Taylor L 10/08/2022 Bernard Rose's Frankenstein is a relatively accurate modern rendition of Mary Shelley's classic novel, employing the director's sensitivity for today's social- and class-based issues in a similar manner to his most successful work, the original iteration of Candyman. Shifting the perspective entirely to Xavier Samuel's 'monster', the plot focuses less on Frankenstein's own hubris and callous nature in creating a new life thoughtlessly than it does on the monster's naivete being eroded through several rather on-the-nose encounters out in the world, going from innocent, childlike idealist to callous indifference. Most of these events are pretty on-the-nose and aren't handled with what you might call the greatest subtlety, including an execution by cop right on the street. It's a movie that has its sensibilities in the right place and a solid central performance from Samuel, but the original novel remains cutting and universal enough that this remake probably wasn't a necessity.
