Alison Willmore BuzzFeed News Rose doesn't force his monster into a metaphor for anything; he just brings the narrative into the present day and allows it to resonate as one about the people who are shunted to society's outskirts and treated as less than human. Mar 4, 2016 Full Review Gareth Jones Dread Central Highly intelligent and deeply wounding, Frankenstein stands as a stark reminder that in these so-called enlightened times, we still haven't made it that far. Rated: 4.5/5 Nov 27, 2019 Full Review Jeremy Aspinall Radio Times Mary Shelley's 19th-century tale about man playing God gets a fascinating 21st-century refit from Candyman director Bernard Rose. Rated: 3/5 Nov 27, 2019 Full Review Joey Keogh Wicked Horror Bernard "Candyman" Rose's Frankenstein is the dreamy, gory, and strangely moving modern take on the most famous monster story of all time for which we didn't even realise we'd been waiting. Rated: 6.5/10 Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Alberto Abuín Espinof Its use of gore, its plot rage and originality place the movie above the average level. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk An offbeat updating of Mary Shelley's classic Gothic tale that strikingly mixes grind-house gore with high-brow ideas. Kimberly P Very slow... found it rather strange.. watched it because it got good reviews. . Very sorry I watched 1/2 if it... stopped wayching.. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Nathan H Surprisingly faithful rendering with good scares and great performances overshadowed by too much guts and gore, but you can tell everyone involved had fun. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Lagrange P This modern day update of Shelley's classic tale remains quite faithful to the original material. Sometimes a bit too faithful, but those moments only slightly mar this excellent film. Frankenstein's examination of class, wealth disparity, power, fear and associated societal ills has the clear purpose of showing how little progress we've made from the time the novel was written, and it does a depressingly good job of it. Dialogue is sparse, and its themes of individuality, alienation, rejection, love, hate, and fear of the "other," are conveyed by example after effective example. The film is very competently made, and suffers only from the dull and by-the-numbers performances of most of the cast. A welcome exception is Tony Todd, who delivers another characteristically excellent turn as a blind, homeless bluesman who plays the role of sage to Adam as he is forced into a world unsuited to his purity of emotion, immature as it may be. It's a bleak take, and even Adam's "triumphant," solution to his existential crisis serves only to drive its point home. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Alexander W This pic goes hard feel free to screenshot Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/23 Full Review Tom S A fascinating update on the classic trope set in L.A. that modernizes the tragic theme with genuine emotional punch. The director Bernard Rose, who directed Candyman and Immortal Beloved, does wonders with a low budget and manages to be horrifically gory, but also poetic and dreamy. Loved it.
