Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times An achingly raw and tender portrait of two spiritually isolated individuals for whom the laying on of hands is a surrogate for some desperately needed human contact. Sep 7, 2017 Full Review Guy Lodge Variety Superb, skin-prickling performances by the three principals contribute invaluably to the pic's stern believability. Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Jessica Kiang The Playlist Mahaffy's uncompromising approach, and the quality of its performances, make [Free in Deed] a rare and valuable testament: to the terrible danger of believing in miracles, and to the cruelty of a world that might make such belief necessary. Rated: B+ Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Chris McCoy Memphis Flyer The remarkable thing about Free in Deed is that it's not preachy. Jan 15, 2020 Full Review Liam Maguren Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) Mahaffy's visual melancholy will melt into your skin. Rated: 3/5 Mar 2, 2017 Full Review John Beifuss Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) Without condescension or editorializing, this entirely original feature immerses viewers into a distinctive Memphis milieu of seedy motels, antiseptic social service agencies and 'Holy Ghost' worship services. Audience Member Powerful, complex character drama about the power & danger of religious faith Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review greg n tough watch, but worth it Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review brent m An ambitious, frequently heartwrenching tale of faith and the elusive search for understanding our relationship to the divine, featuring an excellent ensemble cast and all put together on a shoestring budget. While the film could have used some judicious editing to eliminate some narrative redundancies, this fact-based drama is otherwise gripping and engaging, even if a bit hard to watch at times. The answers we seek in life aren't always easy, but they often surprise us, taking us in unexpected directions and delivering results that don't necessarily match the form of our hopes but that invariably embody their essence.
