What to Know

Critics Consensus

Jason terrorizes a ship and nearly sinks the franchise in a clunky sequel that feels like self-parody without the charm.

Trevor Johnston Time Out For what it's worth (very little), probably the best in the series. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Director Rob Hedden may have been onto something: From Crystal Lake to Manhattan, the series itself was always drowning in ****. Rated: .5/4 Sep 25, 2004 Full Review Richard Harrington Washington Post Among the passengers is a bright girl who's having visions of a drowning boy, her smarmy guardian, her concerned teacher, a boyfriend whose soon-to-be-late father is the ship's captain, and assorted high school stereotypes. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media For a start, the characters don't even make it to Manhattan until more than an hour into the film and Jason doesn't exactly "take" it when he arrives -- things get pretty tiresome pretty fast in the city that never sleeps. Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) This awful movie barely has anything to do with Manhattan. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 12, 2022 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal It's pretty boring for a slasher movie. Case in point: You will feel nothing when Jason sinks a scalding sauna stone into someone's solar plexus. But as a movie about terrifying rites of passage about what happens to you after high school, it's good. Rated: 3/5 Oct 1, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Khaliel P By the eighth installment, the series is clearly running out of steam. The writers no longer know how to bring Jason back, the victims pile up without purpose, and the change of setting to Manhattan feels more like a gimmick than a fresh idea. Originally meant as a direct sequel with Tina, the story was rewritten under studio pressure, and Rob Hedden’s weak script and direction don’t help. Overlong and drenched in misplaced ’80s pop music, the film delivers 19 uninspired and poorly executed kills. The only novelty is Jason’s newfound ability to seemingly teleport, but aside from that and the New York backdrop, this entry feels like a forgettable TV movie—an episode fans would rather skip. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/23/25 Full Review Oliver C. The reason why I have this movie above part 5 is because of a couple of iconic moments but mostly disappointing for me expecting a city set slasher Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review Brian M Absolutely one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen. At this point in the series, even the kills aren’t entertaining; mainly Jason just goes around punching people or shoving them around for some reason. The lame attempt to add a very forced family drama subplot is another strike against this one. Here’s an example of what you can expect (no worries, no real spoilers here, not that there’s enough of a plot to spoil): a teenage girl looks into some flames late in the movie and flashes back to a moment of childhood trauma (that, incidentally, has nothing to do with fire); she turns to her dad and yells “you’re the one who did this to me!” Then, a friend of hers, having no real clue what she’s talking about, adds to the heated moment by yelling, “you son of a bitch!” There are actually scenes worse than that by a mile; I just got a kick out of that one. Oh, and wait til you see Jason’s face! Seriously! That’s the design you go for there?!? And the upbeat ending?!? Damn this is a stupid movie! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Pedro Henrique C Jeson finally came out of the forest to attack his victims in New York, now he doesn't kill young people who are in a summer camp he will sign on a ship in the middle of the sea. The movie continues bad the same way. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Stephen C Successful sequel in 1 hour and 40 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $14,300,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Garry A This is arguably the worst of the sequels. Jason on a boat? That was a lame idea. The last 30 minutes when he was actually in Manhattan was funny and entertaining. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
