Miriam Bale New York Times The subtle anguish of performances by Mr. Yoo and Mr. Kim is a welcome addition to the gangster flick family. Dec 12, 2013 Full Review Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times The moral that hoodlums who abide by loyalty and principles are redeemable remains entirely suspect. Dec 12, 2013 Full Review Simon Abrams Village Voice While it's not much worse than its predecessor, Friend 2: The Legacy has none of the bromantic charm that made Friend, South Korean writer-director Kyung-Taek Kwak's 2001 gangster drama, the highest-grossing film in Korean history. Dec 10, 2013 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Friend 2: The Legacy is an impressive film that will satisfy almost every fan of action movies, although it is obviously a step under the original, particularly due to its direction and acting. Nov 3, 2018 Full Review Chris Knight National Post Overlong and stuffed with melodrama Rated: 2/4 Dec 13, 2013 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International For pure genre lovers, all of this will be pure catnip, and for others, once you accept all the derivativeness and noisome clichs, it may deliver real, if somewhat primitive, migraine-inducing entertainment. Audience Member What a monumental dissapointment. Absolute disaster. Tried to copy Godfather 2 but mucked it up. They way they tried to incorporate the story and scenes from the first movie was cringy to say the least. Absolute garbage. I wasted 2 hours of my life and I'll never get this time back. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Friend 2: The Legacy changes the ending of Friend. Gangster Lee Joon-seok did not go to the electric chair. Instead he spent 17 years in prison, and watched over a new protege while inside the pen. After being released, he finds himself in a totally different world. Internet can now be used on the phone, soju is weaker, and his friend Eun-ki is now VP and trying to push out everyone else to take supreme control. Lee must gather his old allies and prepare to either submit or fight. The movie is a bit melodramatic at times, and seems to be heavily influenced by The Godfather Part II. There are three storylines, Lee's return to power, his protege Sung Hoon has to deal with his release from prison, and the untold story of Lee's father, and how he came to start one of the biggest criminal enterprises. There's enough gang violence and solid performances to merit a viewing, but its best to check out its predecessor Friend (2001) first for the full package. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review waleed a interesting continuation of the story from the first movie and some great acting again, but it was very hard to follow and a lot of it didn't make sense. was missing a LOT of what made the original awesome, and the ending was weak (1 view) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
