The Birdwells, a family of Quakers living in Indiana led by patriarch Jess (Richard Kiley) and his wife, Eliza (Shirley Knight), must confront their pacifism and religious beliefs when the Civil War sweeps into their lives. The elder Birdwells maintain their beliefs; their sons, Josh (Michael O'Keefe) and Labe (Kevin O'Keefe), are more conflicted. But the family finds a way to help the war effort against the South when they give shelter and protection to escaped slaves.
