Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Well-meaning but miscalculated, Methadonia emerges as an aloof account of addiction. Audience Member In the end all this documentary really does is follow people around while they struggle with addiction. Methadone is surely a controversial subject when it comes to addiction recovery, because in reality, it is not really recovery. It is just a safe guard against people going out and buying heroin to inject in themselves. Getting a daily methadone dose to keep them from heroin withdrawal is one thing. But one thing this movie does show is how methadone when mixed with certain prescription medications, specifically Benzos like Xanax can create a euphoric high, sometimes stronger than the old heroin high itself. And knowing a few people on methadone, guess what they did after hearing you could get high by mixing it with other medications.... They did exactly that. I am sure with time there will be more documentaries on this subject now that is more commonly known, and more of a national issue. I would have liked to see the film go into more detail about the beginnings of this 'medication' and more detail about what the government and doctors think of it as well. I think there is more information and more examples these days as it has come to light in the public eye that a newer more informative documentary could be made. But I can just drive five minutes down the street in Kensington Philadelphia if I wanted to watch people walk around like zombies waiting for their next fix. And I by no means am ripping into drug addicts, I am one myself. I have never had to be put on Methadone thankfully, but know plenty of people who have turned to it. And yes most of them are heroin free, note I say heroin free and not drug free. Methadone does nothing to stop them from doing other substances like cocaine, crack, meth, and benzos. I am glad the movie was made, I just feel like it could be updated now, maybe a part 2 ? I just feel the movie does not really show anything except what methadone does to you and your body. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the worst documentaries ever. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Scary documentary about people in America hooked on methadone.... Sad yet moving documentary. Most of them are homeless New Yorkers, and sad to see the struggle they go through... Yikes Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Eh, nothing special.. But I guess it was worth my time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Its a small but effective HBO documentary that never sentimentalizes the horrors of drug addiction and recovery. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow! I had no idea that this shit was like this. Fuck something has to change in America. A great story, I cared about each and everyone of the people in this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
