Nick M A bank cashier, bored with his comfortable yet humdrum life, steals a fortune and goes on a spending spree only to discover that "money is the most miserable trickery". This work of German Expressionism struggles to find itself and, like an undergrad procrastinating on an assignment until the last minute, frantically attempts to resolve itself in the last couple of minutes with little success. Much like the picture Genuine from this same year, the stylistic choices throughout the picture don't seem to have much point. The impression I get is that they chose to feature Expressionism only because it was en vogue, and not because they had a particular point of view they were interested in exploring that was elevated by evoking the forms of the movement. It comes off as adolescent and amateurish, and its attempt at a dramatic conclusion falls flat. Whether this is a problem attributable more to the source material than this interpretation, I don't know, but ultimately it matters little since both the artistic choices and the narrative leave much to be desired. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member A wonderful example of German expressionism. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I had the privilege of watching this with the accompaniment of the Alloy orchestra. It was an unforgettable experience with this astonishingly stylized German silent film. There isn't much else to say other than if you get the chance you should jump at it to experience this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member An expressionist experiment fashioned after Georg Kaiser's Play of that tittle and reportedly shown in no country other than Japan. A teller, who is in his desire to exchange everyday life for something great and beautiful wastes the money of his bank on prostitutes and in night-clubs, and at the end, disappointed, kills himself to scape the police.
