Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Dec 2
While it’s a mostly solid effort that will play just fine on cable and VOD, Frontier Crucible is unlikely to revive the theatrical fortunes of the Western genre that seems to ebb and flow in popularity. Go to Full Review

This gory tale was clearly made by people who love the Western genre, and it's beautiful to look at, but it's unfortunately missing that certain something that would have made it memorable. Go to Full Review

The film aspires to slowly raise tensions until they boil over, but things are too neat, too clean, and too predictable for the anticipated thrills to be found or felt. Go to Full Review

As it explores morality and machismo on the American frontier, this slow-burning Western captures some striking rural landscapes but struggles to raise the dramatic stakes. Go to Full Review

It’s another chapter in the endless story of how the West was won, although in this telling the West was won very slowly and with little tension or sense of urgency. Go to Full Review

Frontier Crucible embraces all that makes the Western a timeless genre: it’s thoughtful, violent, and set against the gorgeous American West. Go to Full Review

Dec 15 Horrible. Left after 30 minutes. Have never seen such bad acting in an American film. See more Teresa K Jan 2 I enjoyed it. It's one of those movies that will have a great variation as to likes and dislikes. No big gunfight, no blazing action but likeable for me . The actor Myles had such Clint Eastwood vibes in how he portrayed his character. That was a man for Western movies. So yeah either a like or dislike as a movies are. See more Robert G @Movieman3 Dec 31 My take on Frontier Crucible. Overall, I enjoyed it. Thomas Jane was the anchor of the story, delivering a strong performance with solid character work and a range that kept me engaged throughout. Ryan Masson was a pleasant surprise. He was compelling, and I think more exchanges with his father, along with additional close-ups of him processing events, could have added real depth to the cultish nature of "Mule." The cinematography was excellent and absolutely earned its screen time, capturing the natural beauty of Monument Valley. The story itself is strong, though the way it was told felt a bit scattered. I didn’t find the violence excessive or overly graphic. It served both the story and the historical setting well. In fact, a bit more, less graphic and more threatening, could have heightened the tension. The dialogue reflects a style common in 1930s westerns, which isn’t out of place. The overly formal sentence structure didn’t match the emotional weight of the scenes. See more james u @James238 Dec 10 I’ve seen some great movies this year( I"m looking at you Warfare, Life of Chuck, and Train Dreams), and some rather bad ones (Superman, War of the Worlds, Heart Eyes). This movie, by far, was the absolute worst thing of 2025. The dialogue, script, and acting was atrocious. If I could give it negative stars I would do so See more Read all reviews
