Twisted Japanese black comedy which is visually striking yet tonally bizarre.

Edward Porter Times (UK) The film's wacky ghoulishness holds your attention, but there's not much more than that on offer. Despite a lot of manic effort, none of the actors makes an impression. Rated: 2/5 May 7, 2009 Full Review Trevor Johnston Time Out With Kyomi's manga-drawing skills a key part of the scenario, the visual approach is sometimes too fluffily decorative to let the emotions deliver in full. Eminently likeable nonetheless. Rated: 3/6 May 1, 2009 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) Tonally, it strikes a curious balance between black comedy and melodrama, but visually it's a striking film. Rated: 2/5 May 1, 2009 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Daihachi Yoshida pens and directs a film whose strongest point is the presentation of so many dissimilar characters, although all of which are members of the same family and have to interact within the same environment. Nov 30, 2019 Full Review Rob Hunter Film School Rejects Writer/director Yoshida Daihachi fills his brightly-lit scenes with darkness between relatives - some mild, some involving physical abuse - but the occasional laughs and visual flairs prevent the movie from ever becoming a dour affair. Rated: B- Jul 5, 2015 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) Seduction, persecution, prostitution, suicide and uneasy laughter follow. May 7, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews

william d Dysfunctional families often make for good cinema, and this family is dysfunctional with a capital "D." Tip o' the hat to Hiromi Nagasaku for a great performance as the downtrodden Machiko. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting and modestly staged drama that succeeds on the grounds of some great direction and absolutely fantastic performances. Despite characters with quirky back-stories, this is less comedy and more a dark drama about a torn apart family forced to deal with each other in the wake of death. Funuke stays interesting and delivers quality twists and intrigue all the way to the titles, but ultimately piles on so much nasty behaviour between the characters, it becomes hard to invest in any of their stories so much as watch in wonder to see how it unfolds. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Blackly funny one moment and darkly serious the next, this is an unusual and rather cool film I liked a lot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member When her parents are tragically killed in an accident, wannabe actress Sumika returns home to stay with her younger sister, step-brother and his new wife. Tensions escalate however as family secrets emerge... Funuke is a small scale family drama but packed with well crafted characters who each project a myriad of emotions and flaws. Rich and rewarding viewing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Really funny and dramatic at the same time.... Great actresses for lead roles Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Usual Japanese weirdness, but seriously way too long. They could easily have chopped some scenes out of this one to make it move a little quicker. Good, weird, quirky characters, though, and an original story.
