Martin F A very melancholic animation. Despite the whole space western with laser guns, exploding planets, robots and intergalactic pirates the movie is more about the sorrow of life and a question about eternal life. The hero Tetsuro goes from planet to planet using the Galaxy Express 999 train, and every planet gives him (and the viewers) a deep and sometimes hard to hear lesson about life. Leiji Matsumoto's art is as beautiful as ever and gives a more poetic feel to the whole movie. Speaking of Matsumoto's work, the movie brings character from other of his famous franchises. I'm not familiar with Emeraldas and Harlock enough and I felt I was missing something during their apparition but nothing that spoiled the story, it was still pretty coherent. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm not an anime fan by any stretch of the imagination but I hold this movie in high regards. It's a bittersweet, painfully intense coming-of-age tale that involves robots, pirates and a space train. Everything about this movie is gorgeous. Loved the soundtrack too. Like I said, it exudes emotion so for some it may be too cornball but as a cynical person I have a lot of affection for this. Seek it out and give it a shot! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A masterpiece in Story and Spectacle from Toei Animation and talented filmmakers :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A simple yet abstract anime with a deeper meaning; what it means to be human. However, I think it's more appreciated for its visual display. I recommend to it to any anime fan, or, to those who are new to anime. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Oooh yeah this is a good coming of age movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Your imagination is the final destination - and that is traveling to the sea of stars. The 1979 film adaptation of the Leiji Matsumoto manga series, 'Galaxy Express 999' tells the story of the young Tetsuro Hoshino and his wish to board the famous galaxy-traveling train. He joins Maetel, a mysterious woman who suggests that he can achieve his dreams of revenge against Count Mecha for murdering his mother. It was the long trip when Tetsuro learns the true meaning of longing for immortality in a mechanized body. This anime film is a excellently told dramatic sci-fi tale, and the animation here is drawn in detail to high quality. Having finished 'Galaxy Express 999', I knew that if there are more sci-fi anime like this, then I'm in. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
